"Morning." is the first thing you hear when the doors of your office are pushed open and the receptionist Hailey steps inside with a stack of folders.
You lift up your head from the journal you've been reading - home decor one - and slowly put it aside, watching Hailey approach your table. "Morning to you as well."
She puts the stack and one folder almost drops on your coffee cup. "Boss said you get to choose 2 and the rest go to the 2nd floor." By second floor she meant the newbies that Hogarth just hired, 3 men, all ruthless and just begging to be bribed.
"Oh, that's how it is. I thought I was gonna get a day off after my win." You mutter under your breath, but perhaps this was not as silent as you thought, because you hear Hailey let out a chuckle.
"You know boss, it's most likely she's in a bad mood. And, congratulations on the win, finally you beat those goons Nelson and Murdock." Hailey smiles and turns on her heel to leave. "Bring them later to the second floor. Bye."
Hailey leaves, failing to catch the sour expression on your face. Why does everyone in this firm hate Nelson and Murdock so much? They were really friendly, especially outside the court, which is the main difference between them and all the other lawyers - the others didn't separate their work and personal life, or were dicks both in court and outside of it.
Shaking your head, you open the first folder, turning up the volume of the news and notice something odd - Sargent Mahoney on the screen.
"This morning we received an anonymous message about a possible drug place, that illegally sells drugs in Hell's Kitchen. We organized an operation during which we found newly brought bags of cocaine and weed, and arrested four men in the scene. All of them are known to the police and have been arrested on multiple occasions, mostly for stealing and harassment. We have started the investigation of where the drugs came from and who were the buyers." Mahoney stops talking and the reporter turns the microphone away, on screen appear four photos and you recognize one, although pretty beat up.
"Holy shit." You exclaim.
That was the guy who punched Matt outside of Josie's. Who beat him up like that? Who cares, he got what he deserved.
Couple of thoughts begin swarming in your head but you push them aside, at least until the end of the day, now you had work.
The news talk about the inflation and the economic situation of the country which you don't care about, it's always been shit.
Opening the first folder you skim the 1st page - nothing special, assault, both pretty beat up, high hospital bills.
The second was divorce, wife wants the house and kids, husband doesn't want to let go of that 10-room huge house. You huff - rich people.
Third one was more interesting. 16 year old athelete hurt himself during the preparation for tournament on school's grounds, while using more than 10 year old school's equipment. Currently he's being hospitalized, with shattered knee and 2 broken fingers. His mother is suing the school but latter refuses to communicate and denies that it's their fault.
"Now that's interesting." You sip your coffee and turn off the news, typing the school in the system.
"Famous for its volleyball team, 2 time state champions, hm, a karate club, 2 black belts, a newly opened boxing club. Interesting you are, Trinity School, interesting." You murmur to yourself, getting out of the reading trance when your coffee ends. "Okay that's one. What else should I take? What else?" You flip through the remaining three folders, stopping on the last one. "Another divorce case. Can't people just talk shit out without lawyers?" You sigh and flip through pages and notice a familiar name - your high school friend, Sally. "Filed divorce papers 3 months ago, husband Walter, 20 years older, claims that he still loves her, and even suggests that he will pay for the lawyer expenses if she doesn't divorce him. Oh, people these days. What has gotten into Sally anyway? So stupid to marry someone who's almost fifty." You debate on calling her, and that athlete, but decide to call that poor boy's mother first, Sally can wait.
