The next day at three in the afternoon, Jason Timmy, Lady, and I arrived at my parent's house. Jason insisted I spend a few days away to de-stress after the shock I'd gotten. Jason said it would also give him time to have a cleaning crew come in to clean the room so I wouldn't have to deal with it and be reminded of the vandalism again. It didn't take me long to agree.

Since Jason would be taking Monday off to make arrangements to have the nursery cleaned, he would be spending the night with us before heading back with Lady the next morning. We enjoyed a delicious meal of steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, carrots, and chocolate cake for dessert.

We discussed the nursery incident and concluded it had to be some bored teens who'd somehow broken in. "Was the house occupied, or empty when you went for a viewing?" My mom asked curiously as she looked from me to Jason.

"It was empty," I replied before shoveling some creamy mac and cheese into my mouth.

"That's right," Jason pipes in. "The realtor said it had been empty for a little over two years. She explained that the owners retired in Florida and since they had no plans to use the house, they wanted to sell it as soon as possible." I nodded in agreement since that was exactly what the realtor told us at the time.

"It had to be some local boys," Dad said reasonably as he cut a piece of his steak and used the speared chunk of meat to point our way. "It's likely they knew the place was vacant before and used it to party. When they saw it was occupied," He went on with a small shrug. "They decided to scare you two either for kicks or because they were mad you had moved in."

Having said that, dad shoved the chunk of steak into his eager mouth and chewed with a triumphant smile. I could tell he was proud of himself for having solved the mystery. I, on the other hand, began to wonder if he was right or if there was more to it than that.

We then decided it would probably be best if we installed anti-theft locks on the windows and the front, back, and garage doors, as an added precaution. We needed to make certain that no one could get into our house unless they were invited by us, or had a key. I knew I would feel so much better with the added security. I'd feel safe in my home going forward.

The next day, Jason took Lady and made the one-hour trip back to our house right after breakfast. Mom, who had been wanting to take me out shopping for baby clothing, grasped at this opportunity happily. She eagerly volunteered to dress Timmy for me while I got dressed for our outing. I was surprised but happy when mom informed me that dad had appointed himself our chauffeur.

The next few days were full of activities mom and dad planned for us to do as a family. Monday had been our shopping day. Tuesday dad had insisted we go to an amusement park nearby and knowing Timmy would love that, I agreed. It would be his first time visiting an amusement park and not only I, my parents, and Timmy were all excited to get there.

Wednesday we had a picnic at a neighborhood park where dad and Timmy fed bits of bread to the ducks that occupied the pond, while mom and I chatted. We'd just pulled into my parent's garage when Jason drove up into their driveway and hopped out with a wave. We had a lovely dinner of meatloaf, mac and cheese, and sweet peas. For dessert, we had mom's to-die-for baked apple pie.

Needless to say, we were happily stuffed as we piled into Jason's SUV for the ride back home with me cradling the leftovers of mom's apple pie on my lap like a newborn babe. Jason teased me about it and all I could do was laugh because he was right. Of course, I wanted to make sure nothing happened to mom's pie before I had one more piece.

Timmy had fallen asleep during the drive so when we arrived, I opened doors and turned on lights as Jason carried our son into the house from the garage. I didn't notice anything odd until I entered the kitchen and the most horrendous stench possible hit me like a slap across the face. It was a combination of rotten meat, sulfur, and rotten eggs. It was so overpowering, It caused me to gag instantly.

"Oh my God," I gasped out before I flipped on the kitchen light.

"What the hell?" Jason's voice came from the hallway behind me. "Holy shit Lady, what did you eat?" He joked.

I looked around the kitchen, expecting to find the trash can flipped over but saw nothing out of the ordinary. Covering my nose with a hand, I walked to the fridge and placed the pie inside. I began opening windows as I went from room to room and met the same horrible smell. It was hours before the stench was finally gone leaving us both confused as to where it came from since we never located its source.

Jason was snoring by the time I walked into the bedroom ready for bed. "Roll over honey," I told him once I'd climbed into the bed and nudged his shoulder a few times. Jason rolled onto his side and mumbled softly before I heard his soft breathing that signaled he was sleeping once more.

Shaking my head with a small laugh, I leaned over and kissed his cheek before I adjusted my pillows. Once satisfied, I reached out to turn off the lamp on my nightstand. The minute the light went out my eyes landed on the mirror on my dresser to see what looked like a skull with glowing red eyes and its mouth open wide in a silent scream. My heart pounded wildly I stared back at the ugly image that held me frozen.
