Y/N's POV:

"Y/N! We're going to be late!" My mum shouts from the front door.
"Just a minute!" I reach up into the kitchen cabinet and pull out a peppermint tea bag. As I place it into my travel mug, I hear the kettle whistle.

"Y/N!" I quickly pour the boiling water into the mug.
"I'm coming, I'm coming." I utter, screwing on the lid, half jogging to the front door.

"Y/N, you really need to be more organised in the morning." Great, the lecture begins, "Especially since you are starting year 11 this year."
"I know, mum, I know." I reply, looking out the car window at the picket fences lining each passing house. I already know this year is going to be a long one.

My mum stops at the drop off zone of my 200 year old, blue stone school. Parents of the new year sevens guard the entire entrance, taking photos of their daughters and mingling.

"Come on, Missymoo, you gotta get out." She looks in the rear view mirror at the cars forming a line behind us. I kiss her goodbye and make my way to the front gate, pushing my way past the sea of parents and year sevens with blazers ten times too big.

I take a sip of my tea and walk to the undercroft. My friends are already there, chatting at one of the metal picnic tables.
"Y/N!!!" Iris spots me and runs over to engulf me in a hug, almost making me spill my tea.
"Hey guys, I've missed you," I say with difficulty while Iris squeezes the breath out of me. Annette and Madeline laugh. "What homeroom are you guys in?" Iris is still clinging onto me like a koala so I walk us over to sit down at the table with the others.
"11A. Jinx!" They say in sync and then giggle at the fact. I laugh along with them.

"How 'bout you?" Annette looks at me.
"Damn, I'm in 11C." Iris detaches from me and shots up in her seat and jumps up and down on my shoulders.
"OMG! ME TOO!!!" She practically squeals. I reply with a 'let's goooo!' and a little victory dance, then we all start chatting about our summers until the bell rings.

Iris and I find our new lockers and head to homeroom. We sit together towards the the back of the class. This year we have Mrs March. Not the best teacher to be stuck with for a whole year, but at least I've got Iris to keep me company. And besides, it's only 10 mins every morning.

"Good morning, 11C." Mrs March strives into the class. She's wearing a grey pantsuit with her silver rooted hair put up in a tight bun. She's in her early 60s now but you can tell she was pretty when she was young.
"Good morning, Mrs March." We all stand in unison. She waves us back in our chairs as she settles her bag on her desk.
"We have a new student this year, girls. Wanda, would you like to stand up for us?" I see a tall red head on the other side of the class rise out of her chair and forcibly walk to the front.

"Wanda here is from Sokovia, aren't you Wanda?" The girl nods and scans the room as Mrs March goes on about making her feel welcome. Her eyes land on me and we meet each others gazes.

The world seems to stop spinning as I get lost in the forest green. The waterline eyeliner makes the emerald that much darker. The uniform actually suits her too; the blue summer dress fits her curves perfectly. I pull myself away from her waist and look up to see her smirking at me.

Shit. I've been checking her out.

And she knows it too.

I felt the heat form on my cheeks and I quickly look down at my hands resting in my lap.

Mrs March gets Wanda to sit back down in her spot at the front.
"Woah! We haven't had a new girl since Jenna Ryan came in year eight!" Iris whispers to me excitedly. I nod in response with a kind smile.
"Yeah but that was short lived excitement when she decided she was the HBIC."

Iris practically snorts and I quickly cover her mouth to silence her outburst, earning a few interesting looks from the class; including the redhead.

I give her an acknowledging smile and she politely purses her lips at me before turning back to the front.

Mrs March reads the morning announcements and I catch myself staring at Wanda.
"Senior basketball tryouts will be held in the gym after school next Tuesday." Mrs March says, trying to look me in the eye. "Hope you round up a good team this year, Miss Y/L/N."
"Hmm?" I pull my attention away from her. "Oh- yeah, me too, Miss. I'm pumped." I grab Iris' hand and give it a kiss and an energetic shake. She chuckles at my antics.

"And Miss Y/L/N." I turn back to face March. "I asked you countless times last year not wear your scarf with the summer uniform. I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to confiscate it." My face drops to annoyance.
"Oh what! But Miss I-" I start to defend myself.

"If you could please hand me your scarf, you can retrieve it at the end of the day." She interrupts me. A couple of 'ooos' are exclaimed around me as I walk up the front, unwrapping the scarf from my neck and handing it to her. I lock eyes with the red head on the way back. She quickly looks away and pretends to be doing something in her diary. Odd. I roll my eyes about the scarf and sit back down next to Iris.

She leans on her elbow, her body turned my way, "Shit man." I just widen my eyes in agreement.

The bell ring for period one and I walk to sign language. Mr Segrave makes the class fun and the lesson flies by. Soon enough it's lunch.

We sit down cross legged in our usual spot under the outdoor stairs of the west building.
Iris licks her yogurt lid, "You know there's a new girl." She says aloud. I blush and focus on the leaf I am ripping apart in my hands.

"No way really?!" Annette asks before bitting into her apple.
"Yeah she was in homeroom with us this morning. March made her stand in front of the whole class. Omg! And March already had a go at Y/N. She took her scarf! It's literally the first day back! Give her a break! God!" She rants, mouth full of yoghurt and barely breathing.

"What?! Already?!" Madeline exclaims. "That's such bull shit! Y/n, you should try talk to her."
"Maddy, I don't-" I start, but was interrupted by Iris.

"Nah, better not pick a fight, we're stuck with her the whole year after all." As I listen, I see someone walking up to us in my peripheral. Jenna Ryan.

"Guys. Guys. Guys. 9 o'clock." They all look over.
"Oh for fucks sake." I hear Madeline utter under her breath and I laugh.

"Hey Jenna," Madeline greets flatly.
"Hey giiiiiirlies," Jenna practically squeals, elongating the "ir" sound. Annette gives me a sarcastic 'wow' look and I suppress a snicker. She turns to Jenna, straightening her posture and crossing her hands out in front of her lap. I grab my drink bottle and take a sip. This should be good.
"Omg! Like, what's up, Jenna!?" Annette says extremely enthusiastically with a toothy, wide-eyed grin and a twangy voice.

The water I just sipped comes flying out of my nose. A failed attempt to cover a laugh. I cough a couple of times as Iris hits me on the back (ik sooo helpful) and Maddy hands me a tissue.

I just get a weird look from Jenna. Ettie however, is looking as proud as ever, trying not to burst out laughing.

"Sooooo, like, me and my mates are throwing a rave at mine on Saturday night. You guys can rock up if you want. Bring whoever." She says.

She gives me one more side eye for good measure and then turns on her toe, strutting away.

"Okay like, bye, Jenna." Annette imitates her and we all crack up laughing until our bellies are sore. I missed this.

"Sooo.. Party anyone?"
