Villain or Victim?

Turning the amber pages of
The great Merchant of Venice
We got to see the personae,
Shakespeare portrayed in our eyes.

Among the many roles,
We see the "villain" of the play,
Shylock, his name is
Rather, "cruel Jew", as we say.

He is so cunning and so cruel,
The Devil in everyone's eyes,
But have you ever thought about
The reason behind his evil mind?

"He hath disgraced me,
and hindered me half a million; laughed at my losses, mocked at my gains, scorned my nation;"

The cruel Jew says the above
Is it really his cruelty?
The hatred, the intolerance he faces
Isn't it the inhumanity?

Yes, he wants more money
Gets jealous over the kind Merchant,
Bets for a pound of flesh
He wants to take his revenge.

"The villainy you teach me, I will execute"—
Because of the the harsh bigotry,
And for the harsh inequality,
His positive self withers away
Giving birth to an inner iniquity.

Behind every evil character
There's a cause that lays hidden
So look from a distinct perspective
You'll be able to see the pain within.
