The thought of facing him again crushed every part of Adam's soul. He couldn't keep running from the conversation forever but he didn't feel like he had the courage to face his best friend, his leader, after everything he did to him. Adam was lost in his thoughts, trying to understand why Tommy even did what he did. Adam didn't feel like he deserved to be shot, he didn't feel like it should be him making the first move to build this trust back up. He was still healing, mentally more than physically, but Adam knew that without facing his demons he couldn't move on.
'I think I'm ready to talk.' Adam typed out on his phone, his finger lingering over the send button. He wasn't ready, but it needed to be over. He needed to know where he stood, he needed to know what Tommy was thinking. Could their relationship survive that moment or was it really the final nail in the coffin.

"T, you left me to fucking die. You stepped over my body and drove away. I always thought you'd be there in my darkest hours!" Adam exploded, emotions taking over the calm that had previously filled the conversation. "I know I fucked up okay, I shouldn't have hidden in your car, but you just left me... what if I died? What would you have done then?"
"I don't know, but you didn't. I'm so thankful you're okay. I didn't think it would go through your vest... I just... I wasn't thinking." Tommy's face dropped. This was his best friend, his second in command, and he hated seeing him so weak and defeated. Adam looked broken, his entire body being swallowed by the baggy clothes. Tommy couldn't tell if Adam just hadn't eaten, he'd lost weight whilst in hospital or if he had pushed himself into a slump but he hated watching him fade in front of his eyes. "I just saw red. I know I shouldn't have shot you."
Adam was expecting to hear excuses after excuses. He never expected to hear Tommy apologise for what he did. In all honesty, Adam didn't know what to expect. He had a churning feeling in his stomach as he waited for Tommy to pick him up earlier. He felt uneasy in the car journey as they sat in silence, waiting for him to come to a stop. Where else would Tommy have taken Adam but the place it all started, the fishing docks.
"We both did things we shouldn't have, but what does that mean for us?" Adam asked weakly, unsure of what he wanted to hear. The silence grew long. Adam could see the cogs turning in Tommy's head as he tried to perfect his wording. Adam didn't want to leave, but was he trusted as second in command? Did he even deserve it after what he did? Adam's mind began to spin on itself, everything blurring into one mess that he couldn't sort through. He saw Tommy's mouth moved but he heard no words that escaped it. He was so entranced in his thoughts, he couldn't escape back to reality.
"ADAM?" Tommy snapped Adam back into the real world again when he placed his hand on his shoulder. "Are you ignoring me?" Tommy sounded hurt, his confidence had slipped. He could see that Adam wasn't focusing on the conversation and he began to worry. He knew what Adam could be like, he had worked so hard with him over the months to find ways to prevent that spiral.
"Sorry..." Adam mumbled. "You were saying?"
"There's no one else I want as my second, so the position is still yours." Tommy smiled gently at Adam. "If you still want it. I know it won't be easy at first, and everything will be weird between us for a while. But you're still my day one."
"I've always respected you T, always. You're my boy. Even when I was hurting, even when I wanted to hate you, if you told me you needed me, I'd have been there."
