"Make sure to grab my arm if you feel anything odd, okay?"
"Mark," Abigail sighed, "I'm pretty sure I remember how to walk."
He looked at her, disapproving. She may have known how to walk, but it's been weeks since she had. Only three days ago she got a new heart, now it was time for her to start moving again. As much as Mark tried to postpone it and withhold her from doing so.
Abigail on the other hand was more than ready to start moving again. She had been in the hospital for six weeks now, whereof only two and a half working. The other three and a half weeks she spent chained to the hospital bed.
It had been way too long.
She stood up and felt her legs tremble, but she wasn't going to let her brother know that. She knew that Mark knew, felt it, and saw it. He just wasn't going to say anything that could make her pull away or push him away.
"Abi," Mark breathed.
She didn't listen and made a step forward. Her right leg was the first to give out. Abigail felt herself falling to the ground, fast. But she never hit the ground, because Mark had caught her before that could happen.
"You can try again tomorrow," Rose said from the other side of the room.
Abigail looked up and saw Derek and his McRebound standing in the door opening. She wasn't going to try again, but now that Rose had said what she said, she was most definitely going to try again.
"Mark," she said.
She didn't have to say any more, because Mark was right there with her. He, just like her, couldn't stand the scrub nurse. Sure, the woman was nice, but she was boring, so boring. She didn't understand how Derek could be entertained by her.
The disapproving look from the nurse was the last push Abigail needed. She put a step forward, this time staying on her feet.
"Yes, let's go Abs!" Amelia, Meredith and Cristina waltzed into the hospital room.
Mark helped her sit on her bed again, while her three friends occupied the empty seats. There was this awkward tension going on between Meredith and Derek and everyone felt it.
"Phew, well this is fun innit?" she said looking between the people in the love triangle.
Her comment got her a whole lot of different responses. Amelia was trying really hard to hold in her laughter.
"Right, it's a beautiful day." Mark was looking out the window, pretending not to have heard anything.
Everybody ignored him and was still focused on the tension, that meanwhile was able to be seen from outer space.
Rose was looking at Derek, who was looking at Meredith. While Meredith was looking around the room avoiding eye contact with everyone present and slowly tapping her nails on the arm of the chair.
Cristina wasn't even trying to hide her feelings, she was laughing her ass off. "Ahh guys, this was really awkward."
Rose stormed out of the room. Derek hadn't noticed until Mark cleared his throat and nodded his head towards the empty spot in the doorway. Derek followed his 'girlfriend', but the damage was done.
"Someone help me in the wheelchair."
Amelia and Cristina immediately stood up and helped her in.
"What do you think you are doing, Abigail?" her brother asked.
"Well, I'm going to see how it's gonna play out." She turned to Amelia who was standing behind the wheelchair. "Let's get going."
"Abigail, no!" Mark yelled after her, but he was too late and was left with the images of his sister waving at him.
