As I wake up the stairs I spot Rose sitting on a bench, alone. Should I go and talk to her? I know Rose hates being alone, so where is Maria, her so called 'best friend'?
"Can I sit here?" I ask with a small smile.
A few years are running down her red cheeks. She nods without looking at me, starring at the deal blue river behind the school's gates, locking us in like some kind of prison cage. I take her gently in my arms and place her head on my shoulder. She lets out a sob and hold on my hand.
"Rose? Do... do your parents know? About..." I ask in, carefully, trying not to affect her.
She doesn't answer at first.
"No, my mom isn't answering the phone and my dad's on a plane to Japan."
After Sirius had disappeared, Rose's father had left them. He had said it was too hard for him to see them without thinking of his lost son. But Rose and I know what really happened. She told us before everything happened, when we were just a group of good friends gossiping about our more or less juicy lives. I remember she was completely depressed at that time. Her father had found someone else, he didn't love her, but he didn't love Rose's mother either.
"Do you want to sleep over tonight? I don't want you to be alone at home if your mom comes back late from work. And you know my mom would love to see you again."
Rose looks at me and a smile I hadn't seen a long time appears on her red face.
"Thank you..." she pauses before looking back at me. "we weren't expecting that..."
I look at the few students starting to fill the field.
"No we weren't."
"Rachel—do you think we should tell them? What we did?"
I knew she was going to ask that.
"No. No one can know. We did a mistake but it had nothing—nothing do you hear me?—to do with Emily's death. He didn't do anything.
"That's not what Helena thinks..."
"Well you know what? I so t give two shits about what she thinks. We fucked up, yes, but her death wasn't related okay?"
