The fluffy white scarf, gloves, and expensive diamonds did not make me look less than the other beautifully adorned ladies out here. But inside, I was constantly asking myself how one can earn so much to the point where all the city's elite are invited to their party. I could notice quite a handful of renowned faces in the crowd despite the mask they were advised to wear.
I grabbed a glass of champagne as the waiter was serving around the huge ballroom. Meanwhile, Theodore was having a good chat with some of the guests, introducing me as his date who was soon going to be a recruit- god knows for what. Regardless, I played my role well.
While I was busy looking around, I didn't realize Theodore was nowhere to be seen around. I could feel a little anxiety build up inside me. I still kept up a calm demeanor and stayed in a quiet corner, hoping not to draw much attention to me.
"Mind if I ask what a beautiful woman like this is doing in the corner alone?" A man with a deep voice approached me. I turned around to see a man in his late twenties, sipping his drink in his intricately designed purple suit. His delicious dark skin enhanced his gray eyes as he looked at me. To match his grey eyes, he had a fancy silver mask on.
"I think I would mind it." I smiled and replied.
He raised his eyebrows while swirling the drink in his cup. The ice clinked against the glass as he did so. "It's a grand party." He said, looking down, at the crowd of people. He had an unusual accent but every word rolled out his tongue smoothly. "Anyone would welcome your presence, a beauty as yours is quite exquisite."
I smiled. "I'm flattered but I think that compliment rather suits you, Mr?"
"Call me Ezra. Only Ezra." He said. After looking at the crowd of people, his eyes suddenly hardened. "As much as I'd love to ask you for a dance, there are some. matters I have to attend to Ms.?"
"Gunn," I said. He chuckled and said, "I'll remember that for sure." With that, he defended to camouflage into the crowd.
After finishing two more glasses of champagne and looking around the room, I finally found Theodore laughing with a group of beautiful women. I rushed down to get to him. But as soon as I stepped down from the final step, I was pulled away strongly by someone.
I was standing in a long corridor right behind the ballroom. And a familiar face stood in front of me, Reece.
"What the hell are you doing here?!" Reece asked, breathlessly, trapping me in his arms. His black tuxedo was making him look neat with the little black diamond pin.
I looked around, confused. "Theodore asked me to be his date and-"
The muscle in his jaw worked as I mentioned Theodore's name. "What about him?" He punched his hand aggressively against the wall making me flinch.
"He- he asked-" I stuttered.
"You will scare the poor girl away," Theodore spoke from the end of the corridor, slowly walking towards us.
Reece stood straight, turning his attention to him. "Who the fuck told you to bring her here?!" He snapped.
"I was told I could bring in a date with me. Aren't you happy to see her on your most important day?" Theodore chuckled as he walked.
Reece's eyes darkened as he clutched his fist tight. "What do you want, Theodore?" He said with a pause.
Theodore stood with his head held high and hands in his pocket. His lips had his usual smug smile and a bit of playfulness sparked in his eyes. "Nothing you can give." He smirked.
Reece marched and grabbed him by his collar, lifting him close enough to challenge him.
"Reece!" I called out abruptly. Theodore motioned me to stay back with a little nod.
