Chapter 11: One More Day

 Naraku told himself that it was an attempt to win over Kagome when he spoke. He wanted to believe it was because she could, and would, make him a poison antidote if he admitted the effects of the moth demon's poison. He told himself a lot of things. But as he stared at the surprise and delight in Kagome's gaze at his admission, he was forced to realize that his plan wasn't exactly going as planned. It pleased him to see the pleasure in her gaze. If not for the threat of losing Kagome and Shippo to Inuyasha, he would live exactly as a Lord would, no barriers, no chains keeping Kagome and Shippo tied here. Nothing, but him. Part of him wanted to see what would happen if he did let Kagome and Shippo go. But panic reared at the notion, so he dismissed it. Instead, he waited quietly for Kagome's response.

"You...what?" she breathed after a long minute. He closed his eyes and let out a long breath.

"Mistrust me if you will, after all, I am a vile demon." he said, frowning a little as he shifted to gaze out of the window. Once, he reveled in being vile, reveled in his schemes that gained him power. Now he was discontent. Once he would have fought Inuyasha to the death. Now he just wanted to be left in peace, with Kagome, and with this castle. Was that Kagome's doing? How did she do something of that magnitude in a few short weeks?

"No, I..." she began softly. He glanced at her again, and his heart jolted at the small smile she wore. She placed the cloth back in the basin, and he quickly straightened his kimono. He needed rest, as much as he hated to admit it. But he waited to see what would happen. She took a deep breath.

"Inside the Jewel." she said, "It came out that you wanted Kikyo's heart all along. Isn't that why you hate Inuyasha?" he flinched.

"Much of the reason I despise that hanyou was his relationship with Kikyo." he admitted coolly, cautiously. Where was she going with this?

"So, you still want Kikyo's heart." she said quietly. He wrapped an arm around her swiftly, hauling her into his lap.

"Listen to me, Kagome." he growled, glaring at her. How did she rile him up so much and still scare him with her absence? "All I want from Kikyo is for her to return to the dead for good. Her existence causes you nothing but pain." he hesitated, and then sighed, "But I do have to admit that I am also grateful for her existence."

"Huh?" she blinked at him as her cheeks flushed, "Wh...why?" he released her with one hand and stroked her cheek lightly.

"If that hanyou hadn't been foolish enough to choose her, I would never have claimed you." he said, and then realized how that sounded. No, he needed to be colder. More calculating. She was riling him up, stirring the emotions he didn't want to feel, making him admit things he didn't want to. How? How was she able to do this? He'd wanted to ensnare her. When had he been ensnared?

"Wh...what does that mean?" she sounded uncertain and confused. He struggled internally to figure out what to do. Undoubtedly, her heart was being swayed. If the truth helped to that end, he wasn't above telling it. He flinched slightly as he recalled Kagome yelling at him that she was still afraid of him because he was a liar. Because she didn't know if or when he'd betray her. He flipped over, so she was pressed to the futon beneath him, his free hand now bracing him near her head. Her eyes widened a little.

"You're mine. I told you as much before." he said, "Now tell me; regarding Inuyasha," his eyes narrowed here. Even staring at Kagome's beautiful face, and knowing how precious she was to him, he couldn't hide the anger Inuyasha gave him. Because for the longest time, she stood at Inuyasha's side, not Naraku's. Because Inuyasha somehow got to love Kikyo and Kagome. "Would you return to him?" she looked at a loss. Which was answer enough. He got off her, standing to walk to the window, upset and disturbed by Kagome's attachment to Inuyasha. How? How did he break that? How did he make Kagome turn to him instead of Inuyasha? Undoubtedly, she'd hate him if he killed either Kikyo or Inuyasha, or even the wolf demon, Koga.
