It had been a year.

An entire year without him.

Max and her mom let you have his car. It was a reck and they weren't sure why you wanted it but they let you have it regardless.

It took you many long nights and early mornings, but you had fixed it. It was still extremely loud, and you knew how to fix it. But you left it that way because it was how he liked it. He liked to hear the engine scream when he went 90 down an abandoned road.

You were honestly surprised he never got pulled over.

He had taken you to so many places in that car that you needed it to cope with the loss.

Once you had gotten it fixed, which took you around 10 months, having to stop multiple times to save up money for the costs, you had offered to take Max to school.

You two had gotten really close after his death. She always said you made him a little more tolerable, and he was happier around you.

But he just couldn't fight the Mind Flare.

You had many sleepless nights due to the vivid flashbacks of that night and all the others. There were multiple times when he would be waiting for you at your house. It was Billy. But it wasn't at the same time.

When you heard from the kids what had happened to him you began to test his nightly visits to see if he was actually mentally with you.

You had the house extremely hot and quizzed him on certain dates you've had to see if he knew the answers to them.

He did.

That's what made it so hard. He was in there. He just wasn't able to escape.

So when he sacrificed himself that night. It made you...different.

Max heard the sound of a familiar engine pulling into the trailer park and quickly got ready to leave. She quickly popped some Tylenol into her mouth and took a swig of water before running outside.

It was easier to ride in the car now. She had a couple good memories with you, Billy and her in that car, and the fact that it smelt like you and you kept his necklace hanging from the rear view helped block out all the bad ones.

Max jumped into the car and you sped off. You had picked up all of his old habits. Driving fast, smoking, drinking, working out, the only thing you didn't pick up was his music. Instead of blasting the heavy metal he had jammed into the CD player, you played whatever you and Max were feeling.

You only really listened to music when she was in the car. You preferred the silence and the sound of the engine.

You reached and turned the music down slightly, gaining Max's attention. You reached behind her seat and grabbed a small box.

"I got you something." You said in monotone. You usually spoke pretty plainly with little emotion.

She hesitated to grab the box from you, she didn't like you spoiling her. You glanced between her and the road. "Come on, take it." You shoved it closer to her and she gently grabbed it from you.

"Thanks" She said quietly before opening it. Her eyes widened. "Are you serious?" She said with an excited look on her face. You just smirked and turned to look at the school as you pulled into a parking spot. "Y/n no way!" She exclaimed as she shook you back and forth slightly.
