The next morning, Ilsa and Ethan were roused from their slumber by an early knock at their door. Ethan cast a quick glance at Ilsa before heading to the door. When he opened it, there stood Alanna Mitsopolis, with an offer as unexpected as the rising sun.
"Breakfast?" she asked with a welcoming smile, as if this were a routine morning.
Ilsa and Ethan exchanged a bewildered look before deciding to accept her invitation. For the first time, the enigmatic widow was unaccompanied by her entourage and her inscrutable brother. Alanna guided them through an ancient and magnificent building that seemed to hold secrets within its timeworn walls. Ilsa's curiosity got the best of her as she scrutinized the building's intricate details, pondering its history and purpose.
As they walked, Alanna divulged the building's history with a prideful smile, "This building was once a grand hotel, but it fell into disrepair and had to close. So, I acquired it and restored it to its former glory."
"Thank you," Ilsa replied with genuine gratitude. "But I can't help but wonder where you found the funds for such a grand endeavor. Was it solely from your 'White Widow' reputation and your associations?"
Alanna maintained her composure, though a playful glint shimmered in her eyes. "What other source of funds would I have, except for what I earn from my network?"
Ilsa's inquiry mirrored the tone of the Widow herself, "I was simply curious."
Alanna chuckled, "Curiosity is a virtue. It's one of the reasons I chose you both."
Their journey through the building came to an end as Alanna led them to a dining area. "Ah, here we are. I assure you the food is not poisoned. I recommend you eat to gather your strength."
Ilsa retorted with a touch of sarcasm, "I believe we're old enough to make that determination ourselves."
Ethan, however, cut to the heart of the matter, "Why are we here? Really here? We want the truth this time, no more games, please."
Alanna's eyes twinkled with a hint of amusement as she addressed their concerns. "You're here for the reasons I disclosed last night. And, as a gesture of my goodwill for accommodating your stay here, you will undertake a mission for me. It's a straightforward task, and the intriguing part is that I'll be joining you."
Ethan glanced at Ilsa, who seemed visibly uninterested. "What is this 'mission,' exactly?" she asked.
Alanna elaborated on the mission's details, "Some of the Apostles are planning a meeting in Finland, aboard a train, in just 75 hours. My sources suggest they're after a valuable item, and the event will attract many attendees. Our objective is to secure this item by any means necessary. I'll pose as a representative of my foundation and require specialized protection."
Ilsa couldn't hide her bitterness, "So, our 'job' is to protect you while you secure this item?"
"Exactly," Alanna affirmed. "It appears that your former colleagues are already involved and are currently in Venice. Some very dangerous individuals seem keen on pursuing Lane's ideas, but on a grander scale."
Intrigued, Ethan pressed further, "What kind of actions do they have in mind?" Ilsa observed an unfamiliar tone in his voice, one marked by genuine interest.
Alanna's eyes sparkled with satisfaction as she unveiled a dire scenario, "These individuals appear to have developed a formidable weapon, a deadly gas more potent than the one used during World War II. It could cause unimaginable devastation, potentially claiming millions of lives."
