Blood.

It's everywhere. He can smell it in the air. His lungs are burning. His throat is covered in dust.  He can't see, and his body is flaming in pain. He's being crushed by the concrete  beam, that he had been sitting under earlier. Tommy knows....he's going to die under here. He has no sense of time. Has it been seconds? Or weeks? He can't figure it out. Something seems to be spreading under his body, cold and wet, soaking through every part of his clothing.

He opens his mouth to call out, and spits out blood instead. A sense of dread fills the pit of his stomach, and slowly, tears drip down his face. "HELP!!!" His voice is raspy and it bounces back off of the metal rubble.

After calling for help twice more, with no avail, Tommy tries to relax his body, and shuts his eyes. He thinks about Nikki, and about Ruby.

Ruby.

Where's Ruby?! With a sudden burst of energy, Tommy tries to lift his head. He doesn't remember where she was when the blast went off. Is she okay? Did she survive? His chest tightens, as a fresh sense of panic builds up. He scratches at the floor involuntarily, trying to scrape himself off of the floor.

He can feel the pain thumping. His body is tingling, and something is oozing. He closes his eyes, desperate to stop the pain, and not knowing if he will wake up again.

A knock comes at Nikki's room door, and he tries to turn his head, immediately regretting it as hot-white pain shoots up his body.  The door opens, and his friend Juan is behind a nurse. Nikki strains his eyes, to get a good look at Juan, and Juan stops stock still in the middle of the room. His mouth is pressed into a grimace, and his eyes are cast down to the ground. He looks both relieved and terrified to see Nikki. The nurse does her best to explain Nikki's condition to Juan in broken English, before lifting up Nikki's arm to scan for the patient ID, starting his new medication.

Juan pulls up a chair and sinks into it quietly, covering the lower half of his face with his hands, and glancing at Nikki pensively. The silence is unusually comforting, it brings Nikki some joy to know that somebody is with him, even for a moment.

The news is playing yet again, and Nikki has to look away when they show the missing persons reports. The death toll has gone up yet again.  Tommy still is shown as missing, but a reporter said there were a couple of bodies that had been destroyed beyond identification, at least at this time. Nikki hopes and prays that it's not Tommy, and that Ruby is still here somewhere.

Juan leaves a few hours later, and Vince visits briefly, but, Nikki is eventually left alone again, with a terrible feeling of dread. His hands grip the rails of his bed so hard that his knuckles turn white. The thought of not being in control, makes his stomach turn. The feeling of free falling through life gives him the urge to scratch his eyes out. He just wants to know where his family is, and he wants to have some control over what is happening to him. He presses the nurse button, and shuts his eyes.

Several hands grip the body of the young man, rescue dogs barking, as someone begins to cut through metal. His face is ashen, and his lips are blue tinged, his torso is matted with blood. But he's alive, and Tommy's eyes flutter open. The intense willpower it takes to keep them open is too much. Tommy shuts his eyes again, not even caring about the loud noises.

"Hey this kid is alive." A male voice says, watery and far away.

Alive? Of course I'm alive, Tommy thinks to himself. Someone keeps talking above him, and he keeps trying to open his eyes, or move, but it's like he's frozen.
