As I reached the end of the thicket, I found a cabin, It seemed like a ranger station. I went in, but it was abandoned.. It seemed like it has been that way for many years. I glance to and fro.
Then, I spot it- A telephone keypad. "Hopefully it still works..." I mutter to myself.
I jam the dial to contact my parents- Then after explaining the situation, and how it happened, I chose to leave out the detail of seeing someone stand in front of me in the fog.
Because, If I did, It would seem like a tall tale. No one would believe that, since after I blinked, it vanished.
Then I dial the police- I report the dead corpse, where I am, and the situation all over again. I looked outside to check what the name of the place was.
"Northern Mangold Rangers station, That's where i'm located." I replied to the Operator of the call.
"Alright," She began,
"The police will be coming to get you to your parents, then they will investigate the corpse you found within the undergrowth." She told me with a worried tone.
When we finished the rest of the call, and already explained almost all of the details, They hung up, telling me just to stay put until the police arrived.
I noticed how the rest of the room seemed so.. Strange. Something seemed off.
The room had a bit of the fog trapped in, because of the small peep hole in the window pane. Its ceiling had a small crack on the highest part, making a bit of water come in from the moisture.
There were wooden boards blocking some of the windows and the ceiling, the stairs was also covered by a massive log trunk.
It seemed if someone was trying to hide something up there.
I started wondering if I should check what was up there.. But I was told to stay put until the police came.
Then again, If the police were here, I wouldn't be able to check what was upstairs.
So, After arguing with myself whether to go up or not, I settled to go up to that odd room. As I looked around to find something to break the wooden boards, I found a paper. Not useful, but I thought I should read it.
"Please follow these four rules when going out in the forest at night.." The note began, I shrugged a bit, but continued reading..
"Rule one, If you hear a sound, please walk the other direction. It's for your own safety." What did it mean?
"Rule two; If you feel like you're being watched, Close your eyes. Do not open them until you feel safe again." I failed that rule. "Closing your eyes won't help you.." I thought to myself. If an animal was going after you, it would eat you up.. Unless..
It's not talking about a rabid animal?
I started reading it again. "Rule three, If you get scared easily, Please do not visit the forest, stay in the station instead. Less mishaps happen here, but it's not entirely safe here either."
So there has been incidents here, and I'm not the only one who knows about it.
Now, the last rule. "Rule four, if you see a silhouette in the fog, it might not be your imagination. Stay where you are if that happens. If you start walking again, it could grow fond of you, since you had the guts to move. Many people don't move since after the sighting, of course you would at least be a tiny bit afraid. It will eventually leave you alone if you don't move. But if you did move-"
The rest of the sentence was smudged by water, I had to know what happens if you did move.. Since I literally just did just that a few hours ago.
There was more on the paper, so I continued reading it again.
"So far, the people that just continued along, were just left alone. From what I've heard, I think whatever was following them grew uninterested, since they just acted like everyone else it witnessed."
The paper finished, it seemed like there should have been more, it seemed so undone.. Like whoever wrote this had more to say for themselves.
Well- It was good to hear that whatever followed me is probably long gone by now, I don't want to be the next victim..
I acted like everyone else, just walked off, probably feeling paranoid. I think..
Then, I heard the police sirens from a distance. At least I have nothing to be worried about after they get here. All I need to do is get back to my parents, then live my normal life.
I almost forgot- I wanted to check what was upstairs. The police siren sounds grew louder and louder, So I knew they were nearby. It was too late to check what it was now.
As I looked back, I thought to myself.. "I'll always wonder.. What is up there..?"
The police came in, I breathed a sigh of relief. Everything will be back to normal now, When i'm home..
Or so I thought..
