"Alyra! Time to get in the car!" I heard Bella shout from the front entrance. Hurriedly I walked down the stairs, because no matter how hard I tried I couldn't break into a run.
After a minute or so I made it down the staircase.
Walking out of the doorway, I tried my best not to limp. Luckily no one noticed my odd way of walking.
I sat down on the cold seat of the car, put on my seatbelt, then dazed off once again. Mainly I can't help it, I always space out and pretend to understand what others are saying, following it with an "ok" even if it doesn't suit what they are saying to me. But this time, I decided I should force myself to be alert. I don't want any other accidents happening once again.
The car started, the normal conversations started again as they turned on some music. I was quite glad it wasn't one of the genres of music I particularly dislike.
"Since there's traffic, we have to leave earlier." He told us in a stern voice, he sounded tired, as if he were dealing with some stress and issues he hasn't told any of us about.
We all didn't say anything, since there was no more needed to be added to that simple statement. I turned around then looked outside the window as we passed the normal routine of the place. The city was covered with Christmas decor from every building, well, Almost every building.
Some buildings had simple lights, while others went all out festive. My step-dad wanted me to join in the festive activities, but I had always declined. Socializing just because I wanted to has always been a no-no for me.
I would rather run the extra mile then socialize with others, although I should be used to it by now since of all the events in school.
As we passed by many buildings, I noticed a child heading across the road, while the parent was busy on her phone. The mother seemed to be taking care of the infant, while carrying a bag on her shoulder.
Currently I could tell she was occupied.
Since there were no more working stop-lights, we had to be more cautious than usual. The reason for the lights breaking was still unknown, but the electricians around town had informed the citizens that they were going to fix it soon.
The traffic was quite bad now, since the streets were crowded with honking wails and tire screeches.
Up ahead, we were about to cross the street. I noticed the small child picking up a box of chalk, While the mother from earlier left them unattended.
Before my step-dad made the car go forward, I let out a sudden scream. I hope they didn't think I was doing this for attention, but there was no other way to let my father know quickly enough.
The car had a sudden halt, my father finally noticed after my scream that there was a child.
Fortunately, we were less than a foot away from the small child. It didn't hit them.
Our father seemed like he was pale, Much more pale than usual. We all were frightened.
The child looked up, Not understanding what just happened. I was pretty sure they were under the age of five.
Hastily after the mother saw the incident, she grabbed her child and took him to a safer place on the sidewalk. I thought it was quite irresponsible of her to just leave her own young ones like that, nevertheless we were still relieved we didn't bump into anyone.
My father on the other hand, was quite confused about what to do next. I could tell he was debating to continue on like nothing happened, since that seemed like the only reasonable option at the moment.
From the back, I heard a loud car honk, or four car honks for a fact.
Hastily the steering wheel was grabbed, and the car moved forward as usual. There was nothing else we could do, even if the police came. All of us knew it wouldn't be enough for arrest since no one got injured.
But then, as we made it to the other side, I heard a screeching sound since the windows were open. Quickly I looked back confused, and only found.. a dreadful scene.
The child was on the ground, blood from the back and head. The land rover had bumped into it, although I thought earlier that the mom securely had the child within her sight. That was quite careless of her to let someone small as that stray far from your reach..
My father on the other hand, didn't look back. I was the only one who looked back, seeing that terrifying accident.. Again, I probably would be traumatized all over again, having nightmares continuously haunting me in my sleep, and the shot of guilt of doing nothing..
But there was nothing else to be done, others already called the ambulance. I felt dismayed that I did nothing to help.
