Ruby walked along the path slowly, watching her new shoes skim the pavement as if in a trance.

Her mouth curved into a little smile, a dimple faintly appearing on her cheek.

Blue Converse All-Stars, and she had bought them with her own pocket money.

New shoes, new school. It felt like some movie.

Although unlike a movie, it wasn't perfect, but Ruby didn't care.

Her mind was set on living life, and avoiding her dad at all costs.

Ruby was from Pennsylvania, she had grown up in a small town in a constant autumnal state.

It was quaint and pretty, and she had loved it.

But after her mother died of cancer, her father had packed up their things and moved to the other side of the country.

From then, he had become more and more derailed.

He had become a drinker, and became abusive towards Ruby.

But Ruby wouldn't try and leave, he'd die without her; he frequently forgot to eat and she had to make sure he ate some pasta, or a sandwich when his mood wasn't too bad.

Ruby had wavy, deep, strawberry blonde hair, and greenish-blue eyes, and got dimples when she smiled.

She had a smattering of freckles, and always had a tune stuck in her head.

Music helped her ignore the world when it tried to hurt her, and it worked.

"Everyone, this is Ruby Donovan, she's a transfer from a school in Pennsylvania! She's really travelled far so I hope you will all welcome her."

Ruby stood awkwardly at the front of the class, shifting from foot to foot as all eyes wandered to her.

She could feel them judging her, sizing up what kind of person she might be.

"Is there anything you'd like to say about yourself, Ruby?"

Ruby sighed, and gave a shrug. "No."

And with that she sat down, rooting about her bag for her books.

She gave a quick scan of the class, surveying the students. She saw the jocks at the back, the nerds at the front and all the neutrals in between.

She decided she would enjoy high school the best she could.

Her freshman year was a success.

Coming from such a small community she didn't really understand the 'social construct' of a class, and her place in it.

But now she was in a school with thousands of students, she realised how easy it was to get popular.

Smoke, scive*, party and talk about sport and music.

Because of her newfound popularity, it became a lot easier to get out the house, and her father's abuse had calmed down.

He was still heavily alcoholic, but there was brief moments when he'd look at her with the eyes of the dad she used to know, and she could pretend there was nothing wrong with her life.

Although it was a constant subject amongst the girls in her friend group, Ruby never found herself with a boyfriend.

Sure, she had made out with a few, but they never became official.

They all lacked a personality, and were generally not very bright.

But Ruby was loving life, and couldn't ask for anything better.
