Expect the Unexpected

"C'mon, Eira!" said Merry with much enthusiasm as he and Merry pulled me to the shallow end of the river. "You promised that you would come and have an adventure with us today!"

"If you two get me wet on purpose, I'm going to kill the both of you and refuse to go with you next time," I warned.

"Trying to not look messed up so that you could look nice for Frodo, Eira?" Merry teased, smirking at me.

This question caught me off-guard, though I tried my best to hide it. Instead, I glared at them, my hands on my hips.

"No," I stubbornly answered. "This dress is new. I don't want to get it ruined."

"You mean, you want to look nice for Frodo's party tonight," Merry added. He wiggled his eyebrows teasingly at me. I glared at him and shoved my friend right into the river. "Oi!" he whined.

"You asked for it!" I retorted.

"You're coming in with us!" Pippin declared. He began to shove me into the river with me fighting against him.

"Hey! I told you to not ruin this dress!" I burst out angrily as water seeped through the velvety fabric.

"Whoops. Sorry, not sorry," said Pippin with a shrug. That was when I shoved him. "Oi!"

"That's what you get! Now, thanks to you, I have to go change into a new dress! And don't ruin it for me this time!" I yelled before storming away.

I stomped all the way back home, surprising some of the older Hobbit folks. I stopped once I reached our gate and sighed heavily before wringing my hair out to get rid of the water. I grumbled to myself, wondering why Merry and Pippin always had to ruin everything.

"What happened to you?" A new voice asked.

The voice caused me to jump. I spun around on my heel and turned to face none other than Mr. Bilbo Baggins' nephew, Frodo Baggins. I've grown quite close to Mr. Bilbo's nephew. He was a nice, young Hobbit boy. He always had a smile on his face — a smile that made my heart melt. Not to mention, he had the most beautiful blue eyes that I'd ever seen.

"Merry and Pippin," I answered in a casual voice, though I tried hard to not blush. "You know how they are, messing everything up."

  Frodo chuckled, smiling slightly.

"What were you doing with Merry and Pippin, anyway? You know that they always cause some sort of trouble no matter who they're with."

"I know! I've warned Merry and Pippin to not ruin my dress, and they did exactly that!"

"Well, you should always expect the unexpected from Merry and Pippin," said Frodo. He had a smirk on his face. "You are coming to the party, aren't you?"

His question caught me off-guard, and I felt my face blushing.

"Y-Yeah. Of course," I answered, trying hard to not sound embarrassed. "I wouldn't miss it in the world."

"Great!" Frodo smiled. His smile caused my heart to skip a beat. His smile was so beautiful. "I'll see you then!"

He began to walk away. I frowned.

"Where are you going?" I asked before I could stop myself.

Frodo turned around to face me again, walking backwards. He smiled at me again.

"I'm going to wait for Gandalf. He said that he'd be coming today."

I nodded. As an elfling who came to and from the Shire and to Rivendell quite frequently, I knew Gandalf. He frequently travelled to Rivendell to talk to Lord Elrond. I was no stranger to him.

"Tell Gandalf that I said 'hi',"I told Frodo. He smiled again and gave me a thumbs up to let me know that he heard me. I watched him leave until he was out of sight.

Oh, that hobbit, I thought to myself as I walked slowly back to my hobbit-hole. He's going to be the death of me.
