Chapter eight: end of a long night

AS VAL STOOD BESIDE SCOTT over the railing looking down towards the school, the familiar feeling of pessimism seized her brain. There was no sight of Boyd or Cora yet. She felt eyes on her and immediately turned towards Scott. He looked confident in the plan.
"Argents a smart hunter, this is going to work." Scott spoke, but he seemed to be trying to convince himself more than Val.
"Yeah it's going to work." Val said, though it wasn't because she fully believed it, but because she felt Scott needed to hear it from someone other than himself.
He nodded before moving his eyes below the railing. "There's Isaac."
The two walked down the ramp and to one of the school's entrances, where Isaac stood.
"Help me open this." Isaac said before placing both his hands on the metal door. Scott and Val followed the motion, the three pushed until the door fell open.
They ran through the school before exiting to the courtyard where Argent was placing another emitter in the ground.
"Do you see that?" Argent asked looking up. Val followed his gaze to a firefly flying in-front of their faces.
"Yeah it's a firefly." Scott stated.
"You never went out to catch fireflies when you were a kid?" Val asked. "Even I did that and I was raised by a bunch of psychos."
"No I have, it's-" The man froze, as if he were in deep thought.
"What?" Scott asked concerned.
"It's uh, it's very unusual. The California fireflies aren't bioluminescent." Argent saw the confusion on the two teens faces. "They don't glow." He clarified.
"Does that mean something?" Before Argent could answer, the three heard distant howling.
"It's coming from the field, they're close." Val stated.
Chris grabbed his bag and ran to the car, the plan was to chase the betas into the school where Derek was waiting. The plan went downhill when instead of running inside the school, Boyd and Cora jumped to the top of the building.
