"Oh, come on, Dal!"

"No."

"Dally, you and I both know what it's like to have no one and nowhere to go ." Johnny argued. He wasn't the argumentative type unless he felt passionate about something. Completely contrary to his timid nature.

Dallas sighed. "Johnny, I know how you feel, man. But we can't have a girl living here with us."

"Why not?"

"For obvious reasons, Johnnycake."

"First off, don't 'Johnnycake' me right now. This is serious," Johnny huffed.

Dallas looked over at his buddy. He knew how to reason with him. "Look, man. It just wouldn't work."

Johnny sat down on the couch annoyed. But then began to envision a plan b. "Can we at least help her out some?"

"Johnny-"

"Aren't the Watsons next door moving out soon?"

"Yeah. I guess so."

Johnny glanced over at Dallas as he was tapping his foot to some sort of rhythm. "Maybe I can go down to the leasing office tomorrow morning on my way to work and get and application for her."

"They're not even moved out yet!"

"I overheard them talking last night saying their lease is up by the end of the month." Johnny explained. Dallas blinked. "Don't look at me like that, you know how thin these walls are."

Dally was quiet for a couple of moments contemplating the potential situation before he spoke. "Johnny. How long have you known this girl."

"I don't know, a couple of months. I work with her," answered Johnny.

"You sure she ain't some hooker trying to hustle you?"

"OH MY GOSH DAL -"

"Hey, I just wanna make sure," he put his arms up in defense.

Johnny started at him for a while. And Dallas stared back. It's almost as if they were communicating through the air.

"Johnny, no."

"That's the right answer," he said, squinting his eyes a little. "She's already been corrupted."

"Whatever, man. I'm going to bed," Dally concluded, walking over to the bedroom. "Oh, and Johnny?"

"Yeah?"

"Please," Dallas looked over his shoulder at Johnny with a slight pleading look.

"Fine," Johnny somewhat agreed reluctantly.

Johnny got ready for work the next morning. Pulling his t-shirt over his head, there in the mirror exposed his bare chest and abdomen. He examined himself -- his daily routine. Still, he saw many of the scars he's acquired from his adolescence. He took his left hand and traced his fingers over his right arm, tracing over the lines that lay across in almost a perfect order; like tally marks keeping score of each time he was made a fool in his own head. Anyone who saw them could tell that these were no accident. He gazed back at the mirror and sighed inaudibly. And hoped that there really was a girl out there after all who didn't mind someone like him.

"You look fine, Johnnycakes. Put your uniform on and go," Dallas, sleepily grunted from his bed.

Johnny grabbed a pillow off his and slammed it over Dally's head playfully. He grunted again as Johnny grinned.
