Rosinante tossed in his sleep. He hadn't truly slept well in a long time. Overtime, he gave up and opened his eyes. The other end of the couch was empty signifying he was alone.
Great.
He sighed and adjusted himself on the couch to stare at the fire, slipping into his own memories.
The alarm jerked the man from his sleep. He shot up and quickly pulled on his shoes to assist in whatever emergency was happening.
"What's going on?"
"Intruder." A man called out. "Took the Wardens Keys." The commander frowned and watched men scramble to their stations.
"Where is Katarina?" The man shrugged and continued to hand out weapons. Rosinante grabbed one and ran out to the plaza, hoping to find the girl.
Chaos surrounded him. Men scurried trying to locate the intruder. "Commander!" A marine snagged his attention. "One intruder, that we know of. But we are unable to locate them."
"And Katarina?"
"Hasn't been located yet." His gut churned.
"Keep looking. No one in, no one out." He frowned glancing around trying to locate the smoke haired girl. "And let me know the moment you find Kitty." The man nodded and ran off. It was unlike the girl to not be in the center of action. What if something happened to her? What if she was hurt or dying. Or dead?
Dread filled his mind as the scene around him seemed to face. "There!" His attention returned once more. A dark figure was running across the roof of the base towards the residing jail.
"Stop." The figure slip to a halt and turned towards the man. It was dressed in all black with a mask covering their face, the keys dangling from the figures hip. "Return those and we can work something out." The figure hesitated before turning on one heel and continued towards the jail. "Great."
The man followed behind, eventually catching up and tackling the figure. It hit the roof with a gasp and both slid down hitting the cement below. Rosinante made it to his feet with a groan. The figure also slowly got to their feet and looked at the man. They stared at eachother for a moment, before the figure lunged, sending a hard kick to the mans gut before trying to run away again.
The commander was stunned for a moment, it had been a long time since he took a hit that hard, but he followed the figure again, this time being unable to catch up to the figure. "Fucking shoot!" Bullets whizzed past him.
The figure tried dodging but couldn't get away from the frenzy of bullets flying towards it. It fell to the ground in a heap, sliding through a puddle of its own blood. "Cease fire!" Rosinante caught up to the figure and ripped off the mask.
Sea blue eyes stared up at him. He chocked on his own breath as he took in the identity of the intruder. His legs gave out from under him causing his knees to hit the pavement hard. "Kitty?"
"You're awake?" The womans voice startled him. He watched her turn a corner. She had changed into a large sweater and black leggings. "You didn't sleep long."
"Yeah, I don't do that often." He stretched and slid onto the floor, allowing the woman the whole couch. "Where did you go?"
"Shower." Her voice was plain. "Hungry?"
"No." He tried shaking off his thoughts. Nothing seemed to work. "Kitty, why did you steal those keys?" It was a question long in the making.
She shrugged, plainly. "I don't really know. I thought I knew at the time." Her body shifted leaning on the wall. "My father was arrested and sent to that jail." She chuckled. "I guess I was trying to get him out." The man nodded in understanding. "I gave up everything for a man who didn't even care about me." A tear ran down her face.
"Hey, don't do that." Rosinante made his way to his feet. With out thinking he cupped her cheek. Her eyes flickered up to him, but it wasn't hate in her eyes- Sorrow and sadness filled them. He frowned, pulling her into a hug. "I'm sorry." She cried harder into his chest accepting the hug. Her arms wrapped around his waist like they used to. "Here." He picked her up and moved her to the couch. She clung to his body, letting loose years of bottled emotions.
The truth was, they both needed it. He needed closure and she needed to open up. She cried into his shirt as he rubbed her back for what seemed like hours, but in reality it was only a short few minutes.
"I didn't want to ruin everything." She wiped her face and took a deep breath. "But that's what I do best." She chuckled and moved to her own spot on the couch.
"I didn't meant to-"
"You wanted to know." She glanced at him, her eyes shiny like glass from crying. "You have the right to know." The fire crackled turning her attention away from him.
Rosinante was silent, lost in his thoughts. His tongue begged to ask another question, but he didn't want to overstep his boundaries. "Did you know?" He didn't look at her. The air in his lungs grew thick as he waited for an answer.
"About?" The words wouldn't come to his mouth. He just stared at the fire, praying she caught on. "Oh." Her demeanor changed slightly. " I found out the morning before." Her voice cracked. "I was going to tell you." She played with her fingers in anxiety, pulling at loose bits of skin. "I promise I would have."He could only reply with a nod.
