The rain had finally ceased, after what seemed like days of rain the sun graced the town of Hills in Iowa. I could finally leave my house without drowning and this meant I could at last get new books at the library.
Hills is a small town in Iowa, population 813 and we are in the middle of no where. Everyone knows everyone and gossip spreads like wildfire, there are very few secrets in Hills and if you have one you don't tell anybody.
I walked towards town with my headphones on carrying my stack of 10 books, I could barely see over the top of the pile and was just hoping I wasn't going to run into anybody. I had to be quick, my little brother was at home alone. I was going to bring him with me but Harry detested anything to do with books, how are we related? Mum was away on a work trip and would be back tonight but then again she wouldn't notice if I wasn't there. I had to be home in time to make Harry dinner and make sure he had finished his holiday homework, tomorrow was his first day of high school and I didn't want the teachers to hate him already.
I was almost at the library, I could see the front doors. I had walked 2 miles and was finally here, I was within spitting distance of the building. As I reached for the door my foot caught on the last step up and I fell and it wasn't a graceful fall it was 10 books flying, hair in your mouth, hat falling off, landing in a puddle fall. This was just my luck, I had walked 2 miles on the slippery road and I fall as soon as I am close to any human being, just perfect.
As I started to collect the books and returned to looking somewhat human a strong hand grabbed my arm and hoisted me off of the ground. The stranger pulled me in towards his chest and whispered one word in my ear,
"Mate."
I pushed away and stumbled as I detached myself from him, he obviously wasn't pleased at my actions and narrowed his eyes.
"Thanks for helping me up," I muttered nervously, "I'm Alex."
He shook his head and smirked as he turned to his friends who I just realised were standing behind him.
"No problem Alex, I'll be seeing you around."
He smirked again and turned to leave but not before one of his friends threw one of my dropped books at me.
I just stared at the group as they walked away when I realised I didn't know what his name was. I dropped the books again and ran after them as I grabbed the guy's arm his made a growling sort of noise but stopped when he saw me.
"Look, the little Luna is chasing after you." Someone from the group said joked but everyone stopped laughing when I glared at them.
"I was just wondering what your name was, I didn't catch it before." I said to the guy who helped me up.
"Jamie, my name is Jamie. I'll talk to you later little mate."
For the second time in 5 minutes I watched the group of strangers walk away and only once they were out I my sight did I realise how weird it was to have not just 1 but 7 new people in Hills. Only then I didn't know that this was only the start of the weirdness.
