It was twelve in the morning when I got the call from the head man of my security team. "Sir, you're not going to like this." He said in a low voice. The first thing that came to mind was that this has something to do with Ray'Becca.
"What is it?" I huff as I sit up in bed. Just as I presumed it would, her name fell from his mouth. "It was like a rescue mission. Some guys fought us and just left with her. They outnumbered us by at least twelve people." I lay back down. I'm not too worried about that right now.
"I had a feeling that would happen. Get rid of everything and take the rest of the night off. I'll meet you guys in the morning." I instruct, then end the call. Just as I do, an unknown number flashes across the screen. I smile as I take the call.
"I was hoping you wouldn't turn out like him." I honestly mean that. But of course, part of me still had the feeling that something like this would happen. It's odd that it occurred so soon though. "Well, I hate to break your heart." She speaks.
In the background, I can hear the sound of a train. I take a mental note of that. "I can promise you that I couldn't give any less of the fuck that I'm giving right now." Becky laughs quietly. "Goodbye, Roman." The line goes dead almost immediately.
I can't help but wonder about her plans. And why did she put up a front if she were just going to leave anyway? Nothing about that makes any sense to me. I dismiss my thoughts though to get some sleep. The next morning, I meet my security at my office building.
Typically, these buildings are "safe zones" It's the only places where other gangs and shit can't touch us on. "Guys, don't worry about Becky. She made her choice so now she's on her own. And that's one less body you have to guard. It's a win, win." Francis joined us in my office to talk about moving on from this as well.
"Now that she's run back to her people, the word might get out that a particular birdie killed their boss. So, in order to save my life, and probably my brother's, we are going to beef up the security at our homes. As well as move out more often. I don't want anyone to know our whereabouts. Matter of fact doesn't even tell your moms that you're at work today. Tell her you're doing Pilates or some shit."
In the center of the building is our meeting room, the walls are made of bulletproof glass just like the windows. So, as I'm standing before these men, I can see that just past them, Alice is speaking to someone at her desk. They're wearing a hood with their head hanging down.
Alice turns around to lock eyes with me. Just by that look, I know what's going on. "Hold that thought and stay here too." I walk out of the room, towards Becky. I grab her arm to pull her into my office. Then I lock the door and close the blinds.
"What the hell, Bec!" I exclaim. I'm genuinely surprised to see her here. "I know how crazy this might be, but I only went back to them to find out the truth. I just need evidence of everything you said." I sigh at what she's telling me.
"Everything went with the fire. The only other person that witnessed everything was the one guard he had with him that night. Or the cop that buried the report. But that was nearly seven years ago. You would have to dig way too fucking deep to figure anything out." I lean on the front of my desk.
"That's why I'm doing this. I can't get that stuff on my own Roman." I shake my head at this. I don't agree, but I respect her decision. "Does anyone know you're here?" I go around the back of my desk to grab the extra burner phone that I have.
"No one does." She replies as she takes the phone from me.
"Call me twice a week on this phone. We'll meet every other Sunday to exchange what we need to. Watch your back and don't trust anyone. Alright?" She nods with a small smile.
"Okay, thank you so much for this." She has this new twinkle in her eyes, it's pleasing to see. "Go out the back." That is all I tell her. When she leaves, I go back to the meeting room. I plan on keeping this to myself for a while. I can't risk this getting back to them, for my sake and hers.
"Where was I?" I ask them before remembering on my own.
After my speech, I met Alicia at a coffee shop, upon her request. I sit across from her. Her eyes are red and puffy under all her makeup. My guards had kicked everyone out so that we could be alone. "What was so important that you just had to drag me over here for?" She sniffles as she brings her cup of coffee to her red-painted lips.
"I just needed to ask you about something." Alicia takes a sip before she continues speaking. "Did you move?" She drops her hands in her lap and shifts in her seat. This is completely stupid to me.
I grin as I sit back and drape my arm over the back of the booth. "Yep. I'm not telling you where I moved to, either." I reply. My eyes drop down to her cleavage. She's wearing a cropped shirt with thin chains keeping the top together. Her nipples are just barely covered by the fabric.
My eyes eventually move back to hers. "Can we talk about what I did wrong? I mean, the years do not mean anything to you?" Her brows furrow in confusion. I can hear the pain in her voice, and now that I'm actually thinking about everything, I realize how fucked that is.
"They did at first. Now, I just don't feel anything. You were great it's just you're not the woman for me. That's all there is to it, Alicia." She nods slowly as she takes in everything. "Okay, I guess I just have to accept that." Her voice is weak. It sounds like she's on the verge of a breakdown.
"Is there anything else?" I ask her. She begins to speak again but my guard stops her to whisper something to me. At that moment I was livid. It just feels like the bad news never stops.
"God dammit!" I curse as I get up. "I have to go, it was nice talking to you though." I wave to her on my way out. Security takes me to meet up with Francis and Lucile at a Subway joint close by the city.
"What the hell is going on?" I whisper as I sit at a booth with them. Lucile sits across from me with a frown on his face. "Vincent's Cousin is running The Delgato, his mob. He's got some crazy shit going down tonight. He's sending a crew of newbies to shut down every drug deal that wasn't made by them." Lucile bites into his sandwich after explaining that to me.
The thought of that doesn't scare me. He couldn't shut my shit down if he tried. "Okay, tell me something that matters." I snap my fingers to motion for him to get to the point. "Someone told the cops that Vincent was murdered, and now they are looking into all the people he knows. The cousin, Pedro gave the tip to start with you."
I've never met Pedro in person, I'm sure Vincent just gushed about me though. "It's not like they'll find anything." I try convincing them more than myself. I know I cleaned my tracks well. The same way I've always done.
"You're right unless someone points them in the right direction." I don't like the way he said that. He has a straight face and unmoving eyes. "Is there something you need to say to me." I ask. He just landed suspicion on himself.
"I'm sure he's just fucking with you. Come on." I huff at the way Francis ushers me out the door.
