Maya could hear Gwen and Rita on the other side of the island and she continued reading about Shea and Mary.

"Mostly they dreamt of food, very detailed dreams, lucid dreams; that is, their minds were dreaming with all the senses available to the human mind so that they were conscious in their dream, almost like they would be conscious when they were awake. Now and then some food would really fall on the floor of the cellar and there was a dripping tap and a bucket in one corner. For other necessities, there was a much smaller space, just barely enough room to get over a grate.

"Time passed. The door opened.  'New one. Come out.' The same woman with the white lab coat. The woman in white believed herself to be ready for attack, standing a safe distance away, watching Shea exit with utmost attention. 'Keep your hands as far away from your body as possible.' There was a bang and Shea felt a bullet graze her ear. 'Turn your back to me slowly with your arms way out so I can see them and go in the cabin ahead.' Shea obeyed. She heard the cellar door bang shut and the latches fall in place.

"Once inside the cabin, because of the light change from outside, there was a split second of eye adjustment. The woman in white coughed as they entered. The narrowest opening of time and Shea reacted before she knew what she was doing, without thinking. The woman in white was not ready for this. Shea somehow bit through the woman's neck, spat out a piece of the jugular vein and left the dead body on the floor, spilling out blood that also squirted onto Shea.

"No sound. Shea ran quickly, looking around and opened the cellar door. 'Come now' Shea said. Mary recognized her and stumbled out, terrified. Mary could barely walk and could not run. She was albino, extremely skinny and weak from long captivity. The bright sunlight was stinging her eyes. Shea grabbed hold of her and helped her along. Shea knew they were moving too slow but she continued to hold Mary up, giving encouragement, saying things like 'your strength is coming back' and 'we are getting away.'

"Soon they were being pursued. A dog was barking. Then a shot cut out a piece of Shea's arm and buried itself in Mary. They were stumbling. The dog caught up with them. Mary went down and Shea once again had a surge of power and energy and strangled the dog, killing it instantly. Mary lay on the ground, only her spirit could come with Shea now. Shea ran for her life.

"Shea was not caught. Eventually, she felt safe enough that she walked. The bush was thick. It was now raining and steamy hot with dense clouds of bugs. Shea wore alot of thick clothes, including a hat, and was well covered, with her messy, bushy hair forming a thick knotted veil to see and breathe through. She ate whatever bugs crawled past her hair. She drank the rain that fell. She avoided deadly black bogs, all her attention to what was around her. There were dead animals, some in the bog pools. There were strange animals too, like the dead wolf with two heads, or so it seemed, and mutant birds.

"Shea had to decide what to do, whether to inform the authorities about the injustices she had recently witnessed, or not, pros and cons no matter what. She did decide to continue north, as she had been before all this happened. The evil she may encounter seemed equal in all directions. Where and who the authorities were, she did not even know if any town was nearby.

"Shea kept walking. It kept raining and getting darker. Night was coming. Where to rest? The bush was getting thicker until it was so thick, Shea could not nudge her way through further and she leaned forward into it, slightly suspended by the dense branches and fell asleep on a more or less 45 degree angle. This way as the ground got soggier and oilier with the rain, she was above it.

"As soon as we fall asleep, we start dreaming. Before falling asleep, we pass through the pre-sleep dream state. It's like intense day-dreaming and by passing through it, you leave your ego behind. Your mind is filled with information from the senses and after the sense-receptors stop transmitting, in sleep you are submerged in the information and associations made when you were awake. If you are awake, watching someone sleep, you would think the world entered in sleep is all happening inside the sleeper's body, perhaps just the brain. This process can happen very quickly or slowly, however when we lose our ego, the moment of losing it and falling asleep is forgotten. We dream all the while we sleep, and all the while we are awake, but only rarely notice it and remember only a tiny part of our dreaming, even in experiments. Certainly all the experiments on dreaming show the brain is intricately involved. Intricately, but woven into the construction of the sleep state, is the consciousness outside ourselves, something like the relationship of space to matter. When you are asleep you are still you, in another world, and on the other side from your entrance into the dream world, is the portal unto death. Even for the briefest period of time, but we pass through that sleep world before we enter, or fall through that portal, sometimes referred to as the dark door of death.
