*1st POV*

Sierra Nevada Mountains

Owen's arm is draped around my waist when I wake up. I'm not sure when he came to bed, but the blanket smells like campfire smoke and the winter chill. My eyes dart to the bedside table where the photo still sits. I silently exhale in relief that I remembered to put the note away in the drawer before heading to sleep last night.

I flick my gaze to the window and squint as light pours in. As much as I'd like too, I can't lay in bed all day. I shift around and try to sit up but Owen tightens his grip on my waist.

"Where are you going?" He asks. His voice muffled by the pillow.

I turn to look at him. He meets my gaze through his eyelashes. I shake my head. "We can't stay in bed all day."

"Sure we can." He retaliates and pulls me down to lay with him.

"Okay, I can't stay in bed all day." I point out. "There are things that need to get done." Owen opens his mouth to say something but I cut him off. "Maybe tomorrow." He doesn't look convinced and I lean over to give him a quick kiss before rolling out of bed. Owen grumbles to himself before he too gets out of bed.

We quickly get dressed. I leave the room to make breakfast. Maisie is already at the counter making herself some toast.

"Good morning." I greet. As I walk into the kitchen.

"Good morning." Maisie responds curtly.

I sigh. "Maisie about last night..."

"It's fine y/n. I just don't want to talk about it right now." She explains.

I put my hands up in surrender. "That's okay. I won't push." I busy myself while Maisie finishes making her toast. When she's done she throws on her red hoodie and olive green jacket before heading outside with her toast in hand.

I watch from the kitchen as the door swings closed. Biting my lip I look down to focus  on my own breakfast which consisted of a bagel and some juice. We really need to get to the store soon.

Owen comes out of our bedroom a few moments later. We smile at each other before he comes over and kisses my forehead. "Where's Maisie?" He asks.

"She went outside." I respond and pick up my cup to take a drink. As I take a sip I hear a noise from outside. It sounds like a young raptor chirp. My eyes widen as I glance at Owen. He heard it too. I quickly rush to the window and look out to see Maisie approaching a young raptor. Blue's baby.

"Stay here." Owen instructs. I nod mutely as he quietly exits the cabin. I can't hear what they're saying but I watch tensely as Owen approaches Blue.

The raptor snarls and snaps. Eventually Blue begins to back up. With one final look, Blue turns around and dashes off into the forest, her baby following close behind.

I exhale in relief and turn around to head back to the kitchen. I need to make a list of everything we need from the store. Maybe if I head into town today I'll bring Maisie with. I truly don't want her feeling trapped.

My gaze is caught by a white envelope on the counter. I pick it up when I notice the Biosyn logo on it. The letter is addressed to me. It's a couple days old. Curious, I cut the envelope open and pull out the paper inside. It's a letter saying I've been invited to Biosyn and it's asking me to come visit the facility. It's signed by a person named Ramsay. I recognise the name, I've talked to that man before.

My fingers are drumming on the counter when I hear the front door get thrown open. I glance over my shoulder to see Maisie storm to her room. "Hey what's up?" I ask concerned as I tuck the letter into my pocket.
