Kayla climbs up the ladder to check the door. After a few minutes I hear her voice call down to us. "It's locked. Gonna need something heavy, something sharp, or both." She says. Her voice trails off at the sound of rapidly fluttering wings. She gaze is drawn to the sky.
I watch the sky as hundreds of burning bugs fly past in a mess of red and orange. That's not something you see everyday.
"That...can't be right." Kayla says. I can't help but agree with the woman.
Some of the bugs fall from the sky as the fire kills them. The flames from their bodies lights the nearby foliage, starting a wildfire. "That's definitely not good." I mutter. I begin quickly looking around for something to get the door open when I hear the sound of a vehicle driving before it screeches to a halt.
There is silence in the forest for a moment. Owen appears at my side. "What is it?" He asks.
"I swear I hear someone driving just a minute ago." I explain. I couldn't tell where the noise came from as the echo made it sound like it was everywhere, but a little hope bloomed in my heart at the idea that someone might be out here to help.
Suddenly a loud crashing noise is heard as something begins rolling down a hill toward us. A biosyn jeep rolls down the hill and lands on its top in front of the tower. I stare in confusion and worry at the wrecked vehicle. Slowly I begin taking steps toward the vehicle when I hear a familiar voice start screaming.
"Help!"
Maisie!
"Help! Help!" She shouts.
"Oh my god!" I gasp and race toward the car with Owen and Kayla hot on my heels. "Maisie?!" I shout.
"Mom!" Maisie crawls out of the shattered jeep window and runs around the front.
"Maisie! Oh my god!" I cry as I throw my arms around her pulling her in. "You're okay." I say as I feel Owen's arms wrap around us too. "You're okay." I repeat.
"You came to get me, actually." Maisie says as we all pull away.
I place my hand on her cheek, "Of course we did, sweetheart." I say.
Owen runs his hand through her hair as he greets her as well. Both of us beyond relieved that she's okay. "Heya kid."
Maisie looks over my shoulder at Kayla. "I remember you." She says. I cast a confused glance toward Kayla.
"I remember you too." Kayla says.
I hear footsteps and turn around to see the last people I expected walk about the car. "Oh my god! Ellie? Dad? Ian?" I question.
"y/n?" Dad asks as he looks me up and down.
"They helped me escape." Maisie explains.
I small laugh sob mix escapes me as I see the three standing there. I stride forward and pull my father in for a hug. He slowly wraps his arms around me. "Thank you." I pull away. "Are you okay?" I ask glancing from the wrecked jeep to the three of them.
Dad nods. "We're fine, y/n." He smiles at me and brushes a strand of hair out of my face. This is honestly not how I thought a family reunion would go, but nevertheless I'm happy to see my father and Ellie. Even Ian.
"We gotta go." Kayla speaks up. "Gonna have to break a window to get inside that thing. Hope nobody's afraid of heights."
Before we can move toward the tower, the ground shakes with heavy footfalls as a large animal stomps toward us. I gasp and turn toward the trees looking for movement. I pull Maisie close to me as I stand beside Ellie. Owen and Dad stand in front of the group as the giganotosaurus comes into view.
