Out From The Shadows

-I'm skipping over the Falcon and Winter Soldier series and making up my own stuff, this takes place a year after the last part, so about six months after when the series takes place so Sam is now Captain America.-

We dropped James off with Pepper and Morgan this morning, Bucky and I decided to take a mini vacation away from everything. He was gone for a while dealing with some group of super soldiers so now that he's fully back, we're going to have some romantic time away. He flew us to a secluded place in Italy, it was nice. Part of me was wondering how he was able to afford it but I decided to not question anything and just go along with it. We headed in and set our bags down, I walked out the backdoor, heading down toward the town. 

I found a few cute knick knack shops and bought a few things before checking my phone to see Bucky texted me to meet him at a nearby restaurant. I found it in about 10 minutes and paused to watch him for a moment before I went to the table. He's just a cute human being, I like to just watch him be sometimes. I grinned as I sat across from him, "This place is really nice." He nods as he hands me a glass, "I know, right? I came across it years ago and I always stop by when I'm in town now." I just keep smiling at him, he seems a little weirded out when he asks, "What?" I shrug, "I don't know, I just like being around you. Why? Am I making you uncomfortable?" He shook his head as he smirked, "No, I just thought you were high or something for a minute there. You're usually about as smiley as me." I put my hand on his, "Thats because I'm in love with you and you're the only one worthy of it, besides James." He chuckles as his thumb rubs along the outline of my hand. 

We finished up and headed back into town, we just roamed around for a while, taking in everything. I was window shopping at a toy shop when I heard the sound of a gun going off. I turned around and felt like the world was in slow motion when I saw Bucky holding his shoulder with a worried look on his face, it took me a moment to process that there was blood on his hand. I scanned behind him and saw someone on top of one of the nearby buildings, running off. I saw a glimpse of them jumping across out of my sight and saw it was a Widow. I wrapped my arm around Bucky and took him to the hospital after hot wiring someone's car to do so. 

The doctor told us it looked like he was either in the way of the bullet or it was a warning shot by how precise it was. I immediately called Sam, "Do you know why a Widow agent would be after Bucky?" Sam's quiet for a moment before he sighs, "She's not after Bucky, she's after you. Apparently someone over in Russia paid top dollar to get rid of you. We're trying to figure out why but right now it's best if you guys come back here." I scoff, "I'm not running away, let me know when you figure out why I'm being targeted." I hang up before he's able to say anything. I look at Bucky, who's watching himself get stitches and I felt like I was on fire for a moment, I tried to calm myself down, "Are you okay?" He looks up at me and nods, "I'm fine. After they're done, we can head back to New Asgard." I shook my head, "You can but apparently they're after me and you were just in the way or a warning so I'm going to Russia to see why I'm being targeted." He sighs, "Fine, but I'm going with you." I nod as I sit in the chair across the room, I try to think of why they'd be trying to find and kill me, but I can't think of any reasons at all. I was friends with Nat so anything to do with her wouldn't make sense. 

We got back to the hotel room and I put on my suit before we headed to the airport. I didn't bother taking anything except my weapons, thank god for Tony's suitcases or that would've never been possible to get them on as carry on. We were the only people on the plane, which immediately put me on edge. We got in the air before we saw anyone at all, the flight attendant kept her head down as she walked through the aisles. I noticed widow suit under her dress as she brushed by Bucky, so I grabbed my knife from my boot and followed her to the back. She immediately turned around after we got behind the curtain and attacked me. She punched me full force in the face before I could catch my breath, I got knocked back for a moment and my nose bled a little but I kicked her through the bathroom door and punched her in the face a few times before holding her head still, "Why are you after me?!" She just spit blood on me and in a thick accent, "You killed my sister." I was shocked for a moment, "Yelena?" I whispered before she kicked me out of the room, I stood up quickly and got into position to fight her again, "I didn't kill Natasha. She died for an infinity stone to save the world. I had nothing to do with her death." She scoffed, "They told me you'd say that." Before taking out a gun and pointing it at me, I heard a gun shot go off and closed my eyes because I thought I died for a moment before opening them and seeing her clutching her shoulder with a shocked look on her face. I looked over and saw Bucky was standing next to me with a pistol in his hand, "Are you okay?" He asked as he kept his eyes on her. I nodded as I walked toward her, she just scowled at me, "Have you talked to Clint? He was the one with her when it happened." She looks surprised by what I said, "What?" I sighed, "They were sent to get the soul stone together and only Clint came back because Nat sacrificed herself for it. A soul for a soul." She seems like she believes me for a moment before she shook her head and stood up, "No." Is all she said before she went to punch me, Bucky knocked her out before she was able to hit me though. I looked up at him and rolled my eyes as he looked confused, "What?" I roll my eyes again, "I could've handled her." He chuckled as he helped me move her to a seat.

She woke up about 20 minutes later and freaked out for a moment when she noticed she was tied down. "What is this?!" I scoffed, "You really didn't think you could come in here and actually kill us, did you?" She sighed, "It was worth a try." I rolled my eyes, "Who told you that I killed Romanoff?" She glared up at me, "You didn't actually think I would let that information go so easily, did you?" I glared back and crossed my arms as Bucky stepped up, "Is this Hydra related by chance?" She turned her glare to him but stayed silent so he sighed and looked at me, "It's Hydra related. Jesus will that ever end?" Yelena speaks up, "I don't work for Hydra, I'm independent, they just happen to be the ones funding my little holiday here." I sigh, "Why would Hydra want their number one assassin killed?" She smirks, "They know he's been cured of whatever they had him under and think of him as liability. Liabilities equal death in Hydra, you should know this Winter Soldier." He cringes at that name before sighing and looking at me, "Why would they put one out on you though?" Yelena sighs in frustration, "Did you forget she worked for Hydra years before you did? She was just able to get out and hide but now that she's out of the shadows, she's free game." I give her a confused look, "Why are you giving this up so easily?" She pulls her hands out to reveal she's holding a remote, "Because you won't live to tell anyone about it." She rushes over to the door, grabs a parachute, presses the button and the door to the plane swings open as she jumps out. Bucky uses his arm to hold us as long as he can until we're close enough to the water to drop without getting injured. We jump out and dive into the water below us, which is below freezing. I'm pretty sure I froze as soon as I hit it. 

We resurfaced as a helicopter flew over us, dropping a ladder down. I went up first, Bucky close behind. Had no idea if I was going to die once I got close to it but I was willing to take the chance. I'd rather be shot to death than freeze to death any day. I was realized when Sam pulled me in, he wrapped me in a blanket and sat me down before Bucky got in the front and started flying the helicopter. 

I didn't know exactly what was waiting for me at the end point, but I knew I'd survive it.
