This was the third night in a row that she didn't have time to do her homework. She had gotten home and changed into her work uniform and left again. It took her an hour to get to work. She barely had any service and only made $10.50 in tips. She left at 7 o'clock and walked to the store to get dinner and breakfast for the next day. She got two single serve boxes of macaroni, a two liter of lemonade, a half gallon of milk, and a tiny box of cereal that was on sale. It cost $9.98 so she put the change in her change purse.
She kept a her change purse with her all the time to put coins she finds on the ground or a few extra cents from the store. She empties it out into a lock box at the end of each day. She has been saving it up for four years and she now has about $580. It's to save up and buy her car next year on her birthday, August 30th.
Clara can't wait until she's sixteen. She'll be able to drive wherever she wants to go and do whatever she wants to do. She'll have more time to do extra things because she won't spend half the day walking everywhere. She'll get more hours in at her job and won't take so long to get home at night. She'll be able to finish her homework and she can doing better in school. Next year life won't be great, but at least it'll be better than it is now, Clara hoped.
