Pete was resting his back on the leather seat of the car, looking far away through the tinted windows that acted like a veil covering his identity. It had been a few days since Kin had ordered him to keep close watch on Vegas, but today was the first time he had decided to go all the way home making the risk of getting caught automatically greater.
So far no movement worthy of suspicion had come to his notice, Vegas behaved like any normal young man of his age. He went to university, to work, then to lunch and back home. That's what made Pete suspicious, his overly normal behavior. Considering what went on behind closed doors, and that Vegas was anything but a normal boy, made his behavior more shady.
It had been dark for some time now.Silence had begun to spread through the neighborhood, broken only by the touch of wind on the leaves of the trees around or by the cars on the road that gradually passed by. This familiar scene that resembled a scene from a horror movie just before the victim fell into the teeth of the predator did not scare Pete. What filled his thoughts with a shred of caution was the familiar exposure to the current situation.
Unlike in the movies, in real life danger lurked everywhere because the real monsters were the people who were out and about throughout the day. Pete was well aware of this because this wasn't the first time he had stalked someone. He had now learned to some extent to distinguish the humans from the monsters creeping around every corner blending in the crowd. Perhaps due to the nature of his job or perhaps because he had once lived with one of them, so he understood from a young age that appearances were deceiving just like Vegas.
There is nothing more terrifying than the lengths to which a man can go, or rather, the lengths to which he can surpass. The human mind was inexplicable beyond any unsolved mystery, darker than the deepest ocean. Pete's experience warned him, like an alarm, that it would be better not to know what thoughts were floating in Vegas' mind. He doesn't want to dive into this ocean to find the answers, because if he does, he's very likely to get sucked in by a whirlpool and suffocate, never to reach the surface again.
This thought process made him wonder if Vegas was aware that someone was watching him, and if the answer was yes, then what fate awaited him?
Then he realized that probably as long as he lied low, Vegas would do the same, until he at least found a worthy reason to make his move, or if he didn't, perhaps he would create one. All these thoughts gave Pete a headache and he decided that the best thing to do today would be to leave.
He started the engine and drove away in the car. But the worries creeping into the back of his mind made his head heavy. He pulled over and got out of the car so he could go to the nearest convenience store he could find. Maybe a can of tea would help him collect his thoughts.
He was so engrossed in his thoughts that he could barely pay any attention to his surroundings, until a faint, but loud enough noise to penetrate his ears was emitted, and brought him back to reality. The first thing he saw was a bottle of mosquito repellent.
''There are a lot of mosquitos in this area, you should be careful if you don't want your blood sucked out'' said a familiar voice and Pete turned out to find Vegas' subordinate, Nop.
Pete remembered Nop. He used to work under kinn before but he walked out of the mansion as suddenly as he had stepped in and started working for Vegas. It seemed weird to Pete but he never bothered to question it any further.
'' I will keep that in mind'' uttered Pete in a nonchalant tone accompanied with an empty gaze following Nop leaving the store.
Vegas was sitting leg-crossed on the chair of his room in front of his desk, reading his book in complete silence. He liked reading, not only it provided him with information and knowledge, but it allowed his mind to expand beyond any horizons and travel far away in foreign lands.
The utter silence was starting to fade by the door opening slowly, entering Nop. Vegas kept his eyes on the book in his hands.
''I brought you your cigarettes'' said Nop, breaking the silence completely, making Vegas jerk his face upfront, his eyes meeting Nop's.
''Tell me Nop...''paused Vegas to remove his gold-rimmed glasses from his glowing face from the light emanating from the desk lamp.
'' Do you know which one of the service dogs of the main family sent Kinn to stalk me?'' continued Vegas with the fascination evident in his voice.
''No sir, I don't know'' answered Nop simply maintaining eye contact.
''I see.'' he spoke before putting his glasses back on, bringing his attention back to his book.
''You may leave'' he ordered and that was all it took for Nop to flee the room like a cockroach crawling back in the shadows .
Whoever it is, I will make sure they regret the day they obeyed Kinn's order. They will be my appetizer before my main dish, Kinn. Vegas thought to himself as he was turning the page of his book biting his bottom lip battling the anticipation to cath his prey and tear it into pieces little by little.
