The rest of the weekend seemed to just fly by. Before Harry knew it, it was Monday morning and day one of his new position. He was supposed to drive into the office with Isaac, likely to receive a little pep talk before starting, but there was something big going on at the company and Isaac had to leave early. It wasn't only Isaac, but Daniel had rushed out early as well.
It was a big commotion for their household. It happened so early the sun had not even risen, but they were all up and Daniel was already working. Daniel was drinking coffee at the island while going through his emails, while Isaac and Ollie were making breakfast. Daniel was reading through one particular message when he froze and called out to Isaac. After a brief, hushed discussion Isaac checked his own email. Then, without any explanation, both men rushed around and left.
Harry had been in the shower while everything was going down but neither of them had bothered to let him know they were leaving, or even stopped to say goodbye. Ollie filled him in after, but even his information was rushed as he was on his own way out the door. Ollie always left really early because he had to be at the daycare before the parents. Out of everyone in the house Ollie was usually the first to leave. After all the commotion going on that morning, it seemed oddly quiet when Harry realized that he was left, all alone to get ready. He was fine getting ready and eating by himself, it was just that If he had known he would have stayed in bed longer. He had gotten up a couple hours early in order to leave when Isaac needed to.
It wasn't the best start to a day he had been dreading but Harry tried not to dwell on it. He could relax and take his time getting ready, as long as he arrived at his usual time, it didn't really matter. While getting ready, he constantly made mental notes to remember to ask Isaac and Daniel about what happened that morning. It must have been a big deal to make them rush out that quickly. He definitely didn't want to be seen as oblivious to anyone's feelings anymore so he was going to make sure to check in with them, later.
After putzing around on his phone during breakfast Harry dwindled through all the extra time he could. He decided to just leave a little early and take his time walking. He ran upstairs to grab his headphones, and popped them in his ears as he headed out the door. He listened to random songs and tried to zone out the entire way to work. Planning to take his regular route, he walked down to the bus stop near his house. The bus took him to the subway station, the subway brought him close enough for a bit of a longer walk or he could hop on another bus which would stop right infront of his building. Neither him nor Ollie drove so they both either needed a ride or used public transit. Harry did have the option of going in with Isaac, but the man left so bloody early. Harry would rather have a few extra minutes at home, along with alone time during the commute, then to get to the office early and look eager for a promotion, or rather, another promotion.
When Harry arrived at his office building, he stopped right outside the front door. He looked up at the building, which seemed overwhelming at the moment. He took a few deep breaths. It's not a big deal, he told himself. It won't be more work, it'll just be work that's more important, he tried to convince himself. With a deep breath, he swallowed his uneasiness, sucked it up and went inside. He didn't want to make his first day worse by being late.
As soon as he crossed the threshold all the hairs on his body raised as goosebumps flooded his arms. He was immediately aware of the odd atmosphere inside, an intense tension in the air. The first floor was all basic administrative staff, so what was causing the stress was beyond him. He hoped, for their sake, that no wayward, passerby had entered the building and hassled them. It had happened once before and security had taken too long to drag the man out, causing panic in many of the, first floor employees.
He looked around as he passed everyone on his way to the elevator. He had hoped he could make eye contact with one of the staff and be able to ask what was going on, but to his shock and horror everyone had their eyes glued to their work. It unnerved him to see everyone's heads pointed to their screen and not a single person cast a look his way. It felt unnatural to only hear the clicking of keyboards but not the whispers of office gossip.
