"A day what exactly?" - "A day that will never have happened. It's a new thing god is testing for getting rid of problems on earth.", Gabriel explained. Aziraphale didn't quite get it yet. It was 1 am and he had been called to heaven pretty surprisingly. "Ok, but what exactly is gonna happen?" - "At midnight some miracle from god has happened and everything that happens in the next 24 hours will be reset by next midnight. After that, everything goes back to just before that day and it will re-start normally. Got it?" - "And within those 24 hours, you could do whatever you want? And it would just be gone after? Like it never happened?" - " Not *like* it never happened. It's actually gonna 'never have happened', that's the point. But before you do anything stupid, we got the instruction to not... let things escalate. Means, no huge miracles, wars and no revealing the existence of heaven and hell. It's still only a test. And now excuse me, I can't deal with you all night, I got things to do."
Walking home, Aziraphale already had an idea what he could do. Something he had always wanted to do, something he had always dreamed about, but knew it was impossible. But even knowing it all would be gone after a day, it would take a lot of courage...
That night, he just couldn't fall asleep. There were so many thoughts in his head. This day came so surprisingly and he hadn't even been able to think about it properly. And his plan? A stupid idea, out of a stupid feeling.
For thousands of years, he had been friends with a demon, had met up with him, talked to him and always been happy to see him. Of course, at some point he had started to ask himself why he felt like this. Of course he questioned the whole thing, but he did never get an answer. Not until 1941. Crowley had saved Aziraphale and his books, even though he didn't have any interest in them. Nobody that was important for Crowley had, except for Aziraphale. And that meant, he was important to him. And somehow, that touched him. More than it should, and it felt good, more than it should. And that was when Aziraphale felt something he had never really felt before, but that still felt familiar. It was the same feeling he had always had for Crowley but now it was... different. And after all, he couldn't deny that this feeling was something he had already read and heard a lot about, but never considered... love. In one moment he realized he had always been in love with Crowley, not noticing, in the back of his mind denying it. That moment changed his life.
And now he was lying there considering to actually confess his love. If after a day everything would be gone, nobody could complain, heaven wouldn't punish him and he himself wouldn't remember anything, why was he so nervous...?
-
9:15 am, as the golden autumn sun was shining through the window and London's streets were already full of people, Aziraphale slowly woke up. It felt like a normal day, a day like every other. But he knew it wasn't. As he was looking into the bathroom mirror after having breakfast and taking extra long for getting ready - to have more time for being scared of the day and trying to decide whether he should do it or not - he sighed. What was he trying to pretend? This whole time it had been clear that he wouldn't be able to... *not* do it. So he got ready, put on some nice clothes - to at least look good, although nothing would matter at the end of the day - and set off for Crowley's place. He couldn't count the times he had checked his looks in the store windows, re-arranged his clothes, although there was nothing to re-arrange, or even stopped and questioned the whole thing on the way as he finally arrived.
There it was. The door. The door to Crowley's apartment. The door to either the best- or the worst day ever. And there was the doorbell. "Calm down, you're only gonna talk to your best friend, who you have known for 6000 years, who is a demon that is supposed to be your enemy, who you're secretely in love with and who you are gonna CONFESS YOUR LOVE TO GODDAMN, I can't do this!" Aziraphale realized he had said that out loud, as people all around were staring at him. He was about to apologize for randomly screaming, as the door opened. "Hey, could you like NOT scream around, it's half past ten in the morning and I wanna- ANGEL what the fuck are YOU doing here??" Crowley was staring at him, his yellow eyes widened in confusion. "Umm, yeah, well, hello Crowley, nice to... nice to see you... I was... uh... in the area and thought I'd... stop by...? No no no, forget that, forget it" Aziraphale took a deep breath to get ready, looked up into Crowley's still confused face, grabbed it and pulled him in for a kiss. At first, Crowley was too surprised to process what was happening, but then the wonderful feeling of kissing the one he had loved and wanted for thousands of years took over and shut down all of his thoughts and doubt. He wrapped his arms around Aziraphale and pulled him closer to finally passionately kiss him.
