"She's crashing.""Charge paddles to 300."
"Okay everybody, stand clear."
"Charging."
"Clear."
Beep... Beep... Beep... Beep
A normal heartbeat once again. I put the paddles down and wiped the sweat from my forehead. Erica Hahn flipped through the patient's chart.
"That's odd. I know she needs a repair but it seems as though not a lot of oxygen is reaching the heart." Erica sighed. She kept looking through for any symptoms that could support a new diagnosis.
"Could it be Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome?" Kate asked.
"You could be right, O'Malley. Could you send for a chest X-ray please? We need to get to the bottom of this as soon as we can." Hahn asked and Kate nodded.
As soon as she walked out of the room, Mark appeared, causing her to jump.
"Are you stalking me or something?" Kate asked, raising an eyebrow.
"No. Just happened to be around." Mark said nonchalantly.
"A plastic surgeon just HAPPENED to be walking around the cardio ward? Sounds realistic." Kate sighed.
"I just wanted to check that you're okay. You know, after last night and everything." Mark said with a slight smile on his face.
"Look I'm too busy to talk about this now. Yes we kissed and yes it probably shouldn't have happened but I have a patient that needs a chest X-ray as soon as possible so can we please talk about this later." Kate said, folding her arms.
"You kissed?" A voice from behind the two surgeons spoke. They turned around in sync to see the youngest O'Malley staring at them in shock.
"Georgie..." Kate said.
"Don't you Georgie me. Are you KIDDING me?!" George yelled.
"O'Malley, people are staring." Mark warned.
"I don't care! You cheated on my sister and NOW you're kissing?? What next, you're back together??" George said.
"I didn't mean for it to happen and plus I pulled away. Anyway, what is it to you? I'm a grown ass woman. I can choose who I can and can't kiss." Kate said angrily.
"I wouldn't mind if it was anyone else. But Mark?? Again?? Seriously?? Have you not learned anything??" George yelled.
"You're not dad. Stop trying to be like him! I can kiss who I want. And plus, it's up to me if o speak to Mark or see Mark. I know he hurt me, but Jesus. It's my life. Get over it." Kate yelled back, storming away from the two surgeons. Everyone stared at her whilst she was running through the hospital. "What are you looking at?" She yelled.
As soon as she got to an on-call room, she ran in and slammed the door shut. She slumped against the wall and slid down it, crying her eyes out. Why did George have to embarrass her like that? Why did she even have to kiss Mark back? Why did she even come to this hospital. Just then, she heard a knock at the door and then it open.
"Hey, Kate? Is that you?" A voice spoke. Kate sniffled and looked up to see Derek.
"Oh hey Derek." Kate said, sniffing and wiping the tears from her eyes.
"Are you crying? What's wrong?" Derek asked, crouching to her level.
"Nothing, I'm fine." She said, trying to clear herself up.
"Kate, I've known you long enough to know that you're not fine. What's happened?" Derek asked with a concerned tone in his voice.
"Last night I did something stupid. I went out for dinner with Mark and at the end of the night, he kissed me and I- I kissed him back. I know it was stupid of me. It was a moment of weakness. Now, he keeps trying to talk to me about it and when I was telling him to stop, George overheard and yelled at me, embarrassing me in front of the whole hospital." Kate said, beginning to cry once again.
"Well first of all, that was unprofessional of George. Second of all, I didn't know you were getting back together with Mark." Derek said, leaning down from the crouched position and sitting next to Kate on the floor.
"I'm not. He just invited me to dinner to celebrate my first surgery at the hospital. I don't even know why I kissed him back." She said, tucking her head between her knees.
"Why don't you try talking to Mark about it? There's nothing worse than being unsure of how you are feeling, especially when it comes to someone you have loved. Trust me, I know from first hand experience. Obviously I know what he did to you before and it was totally uncalled for but if you want him back you're gonna have to tell him sooner rather than later." Derek said comfortingly. Kate didn't know what to do.
"I just don't know because I will always love him but I don't think I can trust him anymore. Not after what he did." Kate said.
"I know I know. Just talk to him and as for George, I'll make sure to have a word with him." Derek smiled.
"Thank you Derek." Kate said smiling. Derek hugged her tight.
"It's gonna be okay." He whispered in her ear.
