Mewtwo
Alex had previously told Mewtwo about his aversion to killing. His rationale, however, never quite made sense to them. It seemed inefficient and prone to backfiring should the target see fit to take advantage of his mercy.
However, standing before a bug type seething with more anger than they ever thought possible, they are beginning to see the merits of Alex's methods.
They don't get another moment to think before the Yanmega lunges at them. They manage to attack with Psycho Cut moments before the bug type makes contact with Bug Bite. The searing pain from the pincers in their left clavicle is a clear reminder of their type disadvantage. With difficulty they pry their attacker off and strike with Aura Sphere to hardly any effect; what little effect their was seems to be wholly negated by the Yanmega's overwhelming desire for bloodshed. This might be the first fight they've had that they cannot win.
"Mewtwo!" Alex calls. "We have to go!"
"How do you propose to leave, Alex? We are surrounded." Mewtwo says while dodging a lunging strike.
"You can fly. You could carry us out of here."
Thunder takes a shot at the Yanmega and stuns it. "There! I bought you a few seconds Mewtwo!" Mewtwo takes the moment and rushes towards their allies, positioning themselves in front of the shattered window. Alex quickly grabs Thunder and gets on their back.
"Her too." He gestures to the woman. He says something to her in humanspeak. She replies with a worried tone and calls to the Mightyena, who was busy holding back the Flygon. She takes out a pokeball and summons the defending pokemon back to her before climbing on. Using Psychic to lift the four of them off the ground they quickly slip out the window just as the Flygon reached out to slash them. The Rocket goons stationed on the outside take a few shots at them but are nowhere close to on target, letting Mewtwo sail off with passengers in tow.
"Mewtwo, heads up." Alex says. "Our 'friends' aren't giving up yet." Mewtwo takes a quick glance behind them. The Flygon and Yanmega are in pursuit as are five Rocket goons mounting flying types. "We're going to need some cover."
"I have an idea. Be ready. This flight is about to get rough." Mewtwo quickly ascends and doubles back, taking a route above the Mauvile while weaving about to keep their enemies off balance. They spot the open air courtyard and dive down into it. A blast of air laced with violet colored energy races past them and splinters a nearby tree. Dragon Breath. The blast prompts the surrounding bystanders to flee and find cover.
Mewtwo winds through the trees and slips into the streets on the first floor. The network of roads should be useful in losing their pursuers. Lots of turns to break line of sight and plenty of movement to distract them. The aura of fear an anxiety from their passengers spikes as they do so.
"Oh, this is gonna suck." Thunder laments. Mewtwo takes a wide right turn onto another street, keeping an eye behind them to watch their opposition. The Rocket members have taken out guns and have started firing on them. They would simply deflect the bullets, but needing to focus their powers on staying aloft disallows that. Thankfully them being on unsteady, moving pokemon means they're unlikely to get a clear shot. Indeed most shots go wide with only a handful actually posing a threat. Still, the sooner they get these people off their tail, the better.
"For Arceus' sake!" Alex yells. "Shooting us is bad enough, but now they have to endanger everyone else?! Thunder, try and shut them down! Aim carefully!"
"I'm on it!" Thunder turns around and starts trying to line up a shot. Meanwhile Mewtwo continues to try and lose them; Weaving and cruising above the streets as onlookers gawk and seek shelter below. The Flygon shoots another Dragon Breath shot. Mewtwo dodges right, letting the blast sail past them and into the wall ahead. The Yanmega, meanwhile, has been slowly gaining on them. They try and take the turns as tight as they can without their companions passing out. It's barely enough to halt it's advance.
The crack of an electric bolt signals Thunder's shot. One of the Rocket goons' pokemon takes a direct hit and tumbles to the ground. "One down!" He cheers.
"Good! Keep it up!" Alex replies. Mewtwo quickly climbs up a rampway to continue the chase on the next floor and maintaining their erratic flight path. The rocket goons start falling further and further behind before they disappear entirely, significantly freeing up options for them.
"Thunder." Mewtwo says. "If you can take out the Yanmega I should be able to handle the Flygon."
"My thought exactly. Keep steady if you can. I'll try and line up a shot." Mewtwo tries to oblige, trying to avoid too many jarring movements. "Almost... I've... gotc-" Movement from the Flygon catches Mewtwo's eye. Another Dragon Breath blast. No choice but to evade. They dive abruptly into the traffic below, narrowly avoiding the blast but also throwing off Thunder's shot. "Woah! Careful!" Mewtwo looks back towards the pursuers. The Yanmega's left wing is smoking slightly as the spiral into an out of control dive and into the road below. "Still hit. Only a glancing shot so Make your move fast. They won't stay down long."
Immediately Mewtwo ascends back up and comes to a standstill in front of the Flygon. Caught off guard he quickly tries to slow down to no avail. Mewtwo's hands clutch onto his head tightly and before he can so much as protest they're already in their mind. Their intent is to put them to sleep, not wanting to frustrate Alex further. But a nagging curiosity lingers in their mind. Why?
Why go through all this over the passing of one human? Why risk their own lives by attacking a dangerous opponent with no plan and no strategy? Why are they so blindly furious? The curiosity is too much. They dig into his memories and emotions. There has to be some clue as to why he's so set on their demise.
They start with when the Flygon first met the Rocket goon. They were a Trapinch back then, abandoned at birth and fighting tooth and nail to survive. After years of struggle the human found him and caught him. For the first time they had constant food and reliable shelter. And not only that, but the human was kind to him. Cared for him. In a world uncaring and bleak, this human showed him hope.
The human took him on his missions. Violent ones, sure, but he didn't care. Every victory was celebrated. Years went by and he evolved and grew stronger. He saw the human as more than a caretaker. A friend. A trainer. A master. Through these memories Mewtwo can feel the emotions tied to them. Love, joy, contentment. Emotions with a strength to them they had not experienced before.
But darkness hangs over those memories like a shadow. It's source blatantly obvious.
The memory of the human's death is like a crack in a mirror. An ugly, obtrusive imperfection that overshadows everything else. Tainting old experiences and brining with it waves of intense emotion like a rolling sea. Sorrow, horror, shock, disbelief.
Pain.
more than anything else, pain. A wound deep and agonizing. The realization that those joyous moments are over. Fate has torn the thing he loves more than anything away from him. Mewtwo feels these thoughts as if they were their own. That pain to such a degree is even possible...
...Arceus... What have they done...
Mewtwo withdraws from the Flygon's mind, leaving behind a single command, "Sleep." In an instant the Flygon's eyes snap shut and he falls to the ground. The entire experience lasted only a fraction of a second, but to Mewtwo it felt much, much longer. The revelation weighs on them like a bag of bricks, the images of the dead human holding their mind hostage. Would they have been better off not knowing? New, unfamiliar emotions bubble up within them. Probably... shame? Guilt? Those seem the most apropos. They have a feeling that these emotions are going to stick with them for a long time.
"Nice!" Alex exclaims. "Let's go! Yanmega's starting to pull themselves together!" Indeed the Yanmega is back on it's feet and about to get airborne. Alex is right. It's a matter to be addressed later. They take off back into the labyrinth of streets, their angry pursuer hot on their heels.
