Wrong soul mate

Birthday Breakfast

As soon as I reach the bottom of the stairs everyone joins in and sings happy birthday to me. I smile at my mom who is holding a stack of pancakes covered in icing scattered on top are rainbow colored sprinkles and one lonesome candle. I blow out the candle and make a wish.

  "Happy birthday little sister."

Stella gives me a kiss on the forehead then squeezes me tight.

" I haven't seen you in a while. It seems like you've gotten taller! So are you excited about today?!"

I haven't seen Stella since her wedding last month. She married her soul mate only after seeing each other for 3 weeks. I ignore the question

" So how have you and Ziek been? How's the married life?"

Stella goes on to talk about their plans on buying a house together in Norman. Me on the other hand couldn't stop thinking about Theo.

"Are ya ready to go Kestra! I've been waiting 17 years and a week to get my love watch and I'm ready to go! Are you excited because you know I am!"

"Yea let me finish my pancakes."

I poke at them with my fork. Mom walks over and gives me a bear hug

"Happy birthday sweetie, today is a big day for you. You're finally going to know your time. I remember when I was 17 and went and got my love watch. Who would have known my soulmate would be my math tutor."

Mom smiled and looked over at dad.

"Me to hun, happy birthday baby girl."

Dad reached over and kissed my cheek.

"So Stella how is that friend of yours? She looked pretty rough at your wedding. I think her name was Una?"

Dad looked at Stella waiting for a reply.

"Not so good, ever since she meat her soul mate things have pretty much went downhill." Then she lend over to us and whispered "I think she may have found the wrong soul mate."

I couldn't help but giggle. Would your life truly be that bad if you where to end up with the wrong person?

"It's not funny Kestra, Una was a good girl and now--"

"Stella sweetie don't talk about that right now especially on your sister's birthday. Kestra honey it's truly not a laughing matter, bad things happen to people when they don't find the right soulmate."

I thought about it for a moment then Nova interrupted my thoughts.

" Are you ready now. I want to get there early, it's a Saturday and it's probably going to be busy."

I reply hastily " Yea one sec."

I walk over and put my dish in the sink, I turn around and ask Stella " What's going on with Una?"

"Well I think it all started when she fell in love with some guy before she got her love watch. I mean who does that?"

She giggled on the last part but I didn't find it funny. All that was running through my head was Theo and our memories together. Kissing, touching, laughing, him whispering I love you in my ear.

"Now stop that Stella, I told you to stop! Its your sisters birthday for Christ sakes. Kestra don't think about all that today ok sweetie?"

I could feel the room become awkward because everyone knew about Theo except for my sister who was to busy finding her soul mate to realize her little sister was falling in love.

" Lets go for real this time!"

Nova comes over, grabs my hand and drags me towards the door.

" Bye guys! Love you mom and dad, we'll be back later!"

We walk over to Nova's pink jeep wrangler. Yes it is pink with fuzzy pink dice on the rear view mirror, it makes me smile.

" Well that was awkward, your sisters kind of an ass, I mean she seriously forgot about you and Theo? Talk about conceited."

" Yea well to be honest I don't even think she knew about him. At that time she was to wrapped up in her own world."

" It's no excuse for her to say stuff like that geez, anyways lets get the rest of our day started, how about some music?"

I nodded my head and looked out the window as we headed torwads the mall. My mind is in a whirlwind and I can't keep my thoughts straight so I lean my head back on the seat and try to take a nap. What happened to you Theo? I miss you.
