Waking up, Thomas was hovering over me, holding me in his arms. He made some noise, he tried to form words, but all I got were some noises of concern. 'I wanted to warn you.' His words barely made their way into my brain. Thomas brushed some strands from my head and made noises as if he was trying to talk. I tried to turn my head, but Thomas didn't let me. Instead, he forced me to look at him. 'She's dead—' Thomas helped me back up. He was already taller than me and didn't need much effort to hoist me up in one move. I hit his chest. 'Blake?' Hoyt handed me some water. 'Why am I supposed to see this? Have you checked her wallet?' Hoyt sucked in a breath. 'We did, but we need a relative to confirm it.' I stared at my mom. Thomas squeezed my shoulder. 'Who did this?'
'We don't know yet... the shooter is driving a black SUV, but other than that, we don't know much,' he said. I felt tears running down my face again. 'I barely recognise her... but I do recognise her shoes. I gave them to her for her birthday a month ago...' I whispered. 'Alright... take her away, Hewitt.' Thomas softly pulled me with him and sat me down on a bench outside. I couldn't stop crying. Thomas forced me to drink some water, which I did. I hadn't seen this side of him before. I usually took charge of things, and now he told me what to do. I guess he wanted to look after me too like I am always doing too. I rested my head on his shoulder.
I looked up as they took the bagged bodies outside. 'We will take them to the mort... I am sorry for your loss, Blake. Maybe you should stay with the Hewitts until your father arrives.' I nodded and looked at Thomas, who forced me to get up. The car with the bodies drove off, and Thomas took me back to his home. He pushed open the door and took me to the kitchen. 'Oh dear god... sweetheart, what happened?' Luda got up, pulling me into a tight embrace. I started crying all over again. She sat me down. 'She's dead....' She brushed some strands from my face. 'The sheriff pulled up next to us as we were heading home to pick up some stuff... he told me my mom was murdered, and I had to confirm it was her–' my voice broke. I couldn't choke out the words.
Thomas reached for his notebook and wrote something down before showing it to his mother. 'Oh, dear... you hit your head?' She checked my head and softly ran her fingers through my hair. My head was hurting in general. 'Can I crash here for a couple of days?' She nodded and embraced me. 'Of course... Tommy, make her some tea.' I heard Thomas shift and walk over to the counter. 'It's my fault... I should've done the groceries. If I did that last day....' My voice broke. 'It's not your fault, sweetheart. You couldn't know.' I was shaking but glad I could crash here for a few days. The Hewitts are always so kind. I honestly didn't understand why other people were gossiping behind their backs. 'Oh, poor baby...' Luda got up and grabbed some pills, handing them to me. 'These will help.' She smiled warmly, sitting back down beside me.
I took them from her and swallowed them with the bottle of water I got from Hoyt. Thomas placed the tea in front of me and sat beside me, grasping my hand. I finally managed to calm down a little bit. 'Do they have a suspect?' I shook my head. 'Someone in a black SUV. There were multiple victims... It was one big massacre.' She sighed and embraced me. The backdoor swayed open. Monty and Charlie strode in with an axe. They had been cutting wood. 'Blake? What happened to you?' Charlie placed the axe down and walked up to me. 'Her mother was killed this morning.' A silence fell. 'Who did that? I swear, I will get them myself.' Charlie pointed at himself. I smiled wryly. I practically became part of their family over the years. Even uncle Monty started to open up a little bit. They almost became my second family. Mostly because Thomas and I were always together.
'They don't know... just that the shooter was driving a black SUV.' Charlie growled and paced around a bit. 'I have seen a black SUV.' Monty nodded. 'Yeah, a fancy one. A man was driving it; he had black hair and a tall and slim body posture. I will report it to the sheriff,' Charlie said. I smiled wryly. 'Thank you.' He ruffled my hair and picked up the axe. 'Let me know how this ends... I swear, I will get my shotgun and murder him myself.' He pointed at me before walking off. Charlie wasn't good at comforting people, but I guess he was trying to comfort me in his way. Thomas moved a little closer and played with my hair. I laid my head on his shoulder. He held my hand and tried to comfort me as best as possible. Over the years, he had never seen me as upset as now. I barely cried.
I drank my tea in silence and started noticing how tired I was. Strange, really, the day just started for me. Thomas pulled me onto his lap and wrapped his arms around me. 'Lay her on the couch, Tommy.' Luda got up. Thomas picked me up and gently laid me down, covering me with a blanket. 'Get some sleep, sweetheart.' Luda sat beside me, rubbing my cheek. 'Thank you...' I whispered. She smiled wryly. 'Everything will be okay, honey.' She must have given me some sleep pills. Thomas looked down at me with a worried expression. I slowly started dozing off.
