Aaron and I were two halves of a whole, everyone always joked about us being a packaged deal. If you invited one of us you got us both without any warning, we barely ever went anywhere without each other. This was why I was an honorary member of the Hart family, their adopted child as they called me so now every summer when they go on their week-long vacation to Florida I got to go with them.
Aaron and I shared a hotel room while his parents had their own.
We were in the beige room currently with a bag of chips next to us, Aaron laid on his stomach holding himself propped up with his elbows as he played Mario Kart on his DS. I was laying on my back leaning my head on his side with my DS playing Sims. The sun was going down and we had spent the day on the water joyriding on a speed boat rental, our skin was burnt and dry but it was the most fun I've had.
My skin was a glowing reddish color almost as bright as my pink hair and Aaron noticed earlier and laughed saying I looked like Pinky Pie from My Little Pony. I attacked him for it and he laughed hysterically with each punch he received.
As we laid there I began to grow bored of video games and my body became itchy which gave me an amazing idea. I wanted to go swimming, the evening water would probably cool off our sunburns plus we never got much time to goof off by ourselves since we always spent the days with his parents.
So I situated myself to lay right beside him then poked his cheek annoyingly until he finally looked over at me with raised eyebrows, he was ranked in last place of his race and I snorted in amusement. "What were you poking me for?" He wondered softly after his irritation wore off.
"We should sneak out," I declared, and his eyes widened.
"What do you mean sneak out?"
"I want to sneak out and go swimming," I explained with a smug smile. "It's late so it would be just us at the beach with no parents. We could swear without getting in trouble."
"I... I don't know Jude," He sighed looking away and setting his DS on the bed. "I've never snuck out before. What if we get caught?"
"We won't."
"How can you be so sure all of the time?" He muttered laying his head down against his arm. His dark brown eyes peered up at me through the longest eyelashes I had ever seen on a person, his freckles were darker from the sun and I couldn't wait until the sunburn faded into a deeper tan on him. He always healed from burns fast, one day he'll be red and the next he will be golden.
I shrugged with a smile at his question continuing my staring at him freely. He never seemed to care when I watched him randomly, he just smiled and watched me back. He wore glasses and his brown hair fluffed atop his head and everything together made him look like all the warmth and comfort in the world made into one boy who chose me as his best friend.
His clothes were always baggy since he told me how insecure he felt about his scrawny frame, I never understood it since I found everything about him gorgeous. I couldn't tell him that with those words though of course because I didn't want him to know how head over heels in love with him I was.
At fourteen you never think about how much a person can change, I never knew he would stop wearing his glasses and exchange his baggy clothes for much tighter apparel. I didn't know that my biggest fear of him trading me in for his football and cheerleading friends would happen either. All I knew was that in those seconds as I smiled down at the prettiest boy I'd ever met I loved him more than anything else in the entire universe.
