"We're going to play a game, okay?" Evie fought to keep her voice even as she herded the two dark haired children into her small closet.
"I don't want to play a game mom, I thought we were going to open presents," Marcus said as he crossed his arms and stuck his lips out in a pout.
"Yeah, and I'm hungry," Abby complained as she plopped down onto the floor in a heap.
Evie looked behind her quickly as she heard the front door shake. Almost as if a very large person were throwing themselves against it.
"What was that mom?" Abby asked shrinking back further into the closet. Fear flashing across her young eyes.
She took a steading breath before turning and kneeling in front of the children pouting on the floor of her closet.
"It was nothing...just the wind. Listen I know you guys want to open presents and eat and I promise as soon as I do something we can. Okay?" She looked between their faces and put on a brave smile. "Hey, if you're good you can have a bag of popcorn before bed. Deal?"
"Deal," they said in unison.
"What's the game we're playing?" Marcus asked as he scooted a little closer to his sister.
Evie tried not to wince as she heard the door shake again. Her heart was hammering, and she bit the inside of her cheeks to keep from screaming. Her shaky hands gripped the handles to her closet as she stood.
"We're going to plat the quiet game. So, you two have to stay quiet while I –" her voice was cut off by the sound of wood splintering and the front door being thrown open.
"What was that?" Abby gasped clutching her brothers arm whose eyes had blown wide at the sudden sound.
"Nothing it's—it's nothing," Evie's voice shook as she slammed the closet doors closed. She pressed her lips to the small crack by the handle. "Stay here and stay quiet. Whatever you do, do not come out until I come get you. I love you both."
She didn't wait to hear their responses as she raced out of the room and down the hall. He heard heavy bootsteps moving slowly across the kitchen tile as she ducked into the living room. The Christmas tree took up much of the small space, its twinkling lights bathing the room in a warm glow. Evie reached behind the tree and grabbed a baseball bat wrapped in candy cane striped wrapping paper. She flipped it in her hands as she pressed her back to the wall peeking her head around the corner to see a shadow move across the kitchen doorway. She jerked her head back around and closed her eyes. Clenching her jaw as her body started to shake with fear. This can't be happening, this can't be happening, she repeated in her mind. He was dead. She'd watched him die, but there was no mistaking that red truck that had pulled up the driveway, or the black boots that clicked on the tile.
