It took them almost two weeks for everyone who needed to know about their relationship to find out. It was a hard line to thread since they didn't want to seem too obvious and eager for people to find out as it may seem suspicious but they also wanted everyone in their close group to know already so they could finally settle down with their daily lives as they pleased.
They had to kick it up a notch with their acting and displays of affection. The problem laid with the fact that for years they've denied any feelings for each other, fighting tooth and nail that their interactions were simply platonic and now even if they did seem like an "old married couple" as their friends liked to call them, that wouldn't be convincing enough for them to figure it out.
Here came the awkward two time practice of definitely them not blushing and ignoring their feelings –as one should in this situation of course— as they practiced to give each other gentle pecks. It was a quick kiss, it looked normal. It had to.
So when they were on Nie Huaisang's house watching a movie, as usual Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian were sitting together, too close and no one batted an eye.
"I'm going to make more popcorn." Wei Wuxian announced as he got up from almost being on Lan Zhan's lap and placed a quick kiss to his lips. Definitely not lingering on the fact that those lips were so soft and wondering how they'll actually feel if-
Definitely not thinking about that.
"Mn." Was Lan Zhan's response.
Wei Wuxian could hear the silence as he left for the kitchen.
The tension could still be felt as he came back a few minutes later with a bowl of popcorn and everyone gaping at Lan Wangji and now at him as he came into the picture.
"I've had too much beer, right? I did not just see that. Right?" Huaisang even went as far as to rub his eyes.
"What day is it?" Zixuan asked, looking for his phone. "If this is some sort of April fools-"
"What's going on?" Wei Wuxian faked innocence, as he asked Lan Wangji before chewing on some popcorn.
"I don't know." Oh, he had chosen the perfect boyfriend. Lan Wangji exuded innocence and confusion right this moment. Things were going smoothly.
Wei Wuxian still couldn't believe that it was harder to convince his friends that they were in a romantic relationship than it was to convince their siblings. Hell, they had a dinner date with Lan Zhan's uncle next weekend where he was going to be officially introduced as Lan Wangji's boyfriend and they were less worried about convincing him than the effort they were putting in convincing their friends.
"You just kissed Wangji. On the lips." Zixuan pointed accusingly at Wei Wuxian.
"Don't fake innocence. What game are you playing?" Wen Qing narrowed her eyes at them.
"Oh. That." Wei Wuxian chuckled. "Force of habit, I guess."
"What do you mean force of habit?" Zixuan threw his hands in the air. "How could this be normal? Why haven't we noticed?"
"That sounds like a you problem." Wei Ying shrugged.
So Jiang Cheng and Yanli did keep it on the down low. No one seemed to be faking surprise. This was one of those times he wished his siblings had rambled off about his love life already. It would've been way easier and he and Lan Zhan could finally move on with their lives.
"Wei Ying." Lan Zhan placed his hand on Wei Ying's thigh, giving it a gentle squeeze that sent tingles all over his leg. Completely normal. "We've been officially dating for two months. We kept it quiet because we wanted to see if we could actually work as a couple. We're happy together, so we decided to stop the sneaking around."
"Sneaking around." Wen Qing narrowed her eyes. "Lan Wangji sneaking around."
"Come on, nothing much has changed! You've all already saw us as a package deal, this just confirms it on another level." Wei Wuxian grinned.
"We just all thought that it'll take you years to get together," Nie Huaisang started, still in disbelief.
"Or both of you dying alone because you couldn't get your heads out of your asses." Wen Qing finished.
"Hey!" Wei Wuxian scowled. "I'm tired of saying this already, but can't you people just be happy for us?"
"I didn't think we'd have to explain ourselves so much. We should've kept this a secret still." Lan Wangji sighed.
Wei Wuxian did his best to not applaud his boyfriend. What they were doing felt wrong, sort of manipulating those around them about just how real their relationship was. Then it hit him just how much those same people kept pressuring them both and it passed a little.
It wasn't a complete lie, they were dating, but not the "conventional" way. They were doing what worked for them. All they wanted was for this period of their relationship to be over, the part where it was new to everyone else, just so their lives got back on track.
It was honestly exhausting. Good thing they only needed that dinner with Lan Zhan's Uncle and probably schedule something with his family too, afterwards they could live in peace. No more jabs at their love life because now they had each other.
