I faintly remember a very kind voice murmuring, "It will be fine. These people are nice; and I am sure that you will see me again, very very soon. So please, don't cry." Then the source of the voice scooped me up and flew off.
After a while, I saw more baskets like mine, with more kids being carried in them. The voice spoke, " Ready? Good. 1.. 2.. 3.. DROP!" And so we fell. Somehow, I landed with my sister on the same porch. The door opened.
The place where we landed was not the best of houses. The landlady left us in the attic to rot. She also left us with a very kind governess. After the landlady found out, she broke our governess' arm and sacked her.
When I was three, my dark hair started turning blue. My friend's was turning scarlet. My friend's mom had just passed in a car accident. She moved in with us.
I quickly learned that not everyone had colored hair. My friend, my sister, and I learnt to hide it. Yearly our principal picked out the kids in our school that had colored hair.
When my friend and I were six, my sister was kidnapped and killed by some bandits. After her death, our landlady started treating my friend and I horribly. We learned to put on a mask for others to see. Sometimes, we forgot who we actually were behind it. It took us a while to get back to ourselves. We only showed our true selves to each other.
Everything started to get worse. Principal started picking out more and more kids. I noticed that the picked kids were never seen again.
Landlady started drinking. Sometimes she came home late and forgot to cook dinner. My friend, now equivalent of a sister, noticed that we sometimes had scars added to our body. They hurt a lot.
One winter was particularly cold. My friend and I were running out of candlesticks. Our blankets were thinning. We did not have any money to buy anything but a few scented candles.
Sometimes my friend had flashbacks from her days with her mom. Her mom was very kind. She always had treats for us, and did not mind if we drew all over the house or exploded her kitchen by accident. She even took us to the movies sometimes. But she never spoiled us like those snobs.
Our hair's color was starting to show. We kept up the act that we were obsessed with hair dye. Luckily, our principal got fired and replaced by another one.
We thought our life was going uphill, but little did we know...
