The Scream

"Ouch. Would you- OUCH! WHAT PART OF QUIT IT DO YOU NOT GET, RAIN DAMSEN JAMIL?" Currently Scarlet was screaming at Rain for continuously stabbing at her. Wendy was teaching me magic, or what seemed like it. Wendy said that it was actually "manipulating matter around you." She had just gone to get me a drink of water. I was sweating and heaving; she had asked me to try and summon a piece of her hair to my hand that she put on the ground. I had absolutely failed that task.

"Ready for weapon-handling?" Wendy asked, walking toward me while holding a pail that looked extremely heavy on her finger.

"Nope. Allow me to have a drink." Wendy glared at me. "Please," I added. Wendy nodded. "Now... about time. Speaking of time, we are done. Tomorrow we will switch roles and I will teach Manipulation to Scarlet while you practice weaponry with Rain." I groaned. "And no complaining," Wendy said pointedly.

"Let's get this journey started," said Rain. His optimism was extremely annoying. I promise, if he continued like this, I would end up jumping off the next cliff that we come by. "You know, Scarlet, don't you think I should have stabbed you harder this morning? I promised you that you would be crying by the end o-"

"Nonsense," said Scarlet. "What makes you think that I am a crybaby? If it must be one of us, I'd say it is you. Wendy told me that you two were being all lovey-dovey in your sleep."

"This conversation is taking an awkward turn. Let's stay quiet for a while." She put some sort of spell on us. "That should keep us quiet."

The rest of the three hours were uneventful. Our spell was completely gone after three hours, exactly. By that time, we had split into two groups. Wendy and myself in the back whereas Scarlet and Rain were in the front. As we walked, Wendy started to talk to me. "Look," she said. "I know that our relationship isn't one that I would call good. But hear me out." I raised my eyebrows.

"Good. So listen carefully. I will not repeat this. Carla and I were conversing last night. She broke some horrible news to me. Synkinisi is getting more and more powerful. And Carla has a suspicion of who is manipulating her. She says that it might not be any manipulator-but her own evil intentions. Xaveria thought that she had given up, as did Mother. But obviously not. I really was hoping that we'd be able to make it to Alberta by next week, but I'm all exhausted now. Let's go to that cliff over there and set up camp again. This time, I'll have Scarlet talk to Carla while you and Rain set up camp. No objections." I sighed.

As we were setting up our first tent, I noticed how stressed out Wendy was. I seemed to be rubbing off on Rain. He was more cautious now, even as he was setting up the tent. I sighed again and went to start the fire. I did the usual for that: gather stones, wood, and think of telling Wendy when I decide to do it like a normal person. When that was done, I looked at Rain and found that he was done with the first tent. I walked up to him. "Go. Cook. I got the other tent."

"Are you sure? 'Cuz I know that you are a girl and may not be able to withstand as much as-"

"Yes. Now go. And do not be a sexist in my presence. I will literally beat the crap out of you. Ask Scarlet. She will tell you of that kid Grosvenor Wright." Rain gulped, as if afraid and left.

As I was finishing the inside of the tent, I heard a shrill scream that belonged to Scarlet. I ran up to the duo. "What's wrong? Why did you scream?" I asked Scarlet.
"It's Carla," She said.
"What?"
"She told me the truth about Synkinisi. She's not actually being manipulated. She is doing it herself. And to top it off, Carla went spying on her and came back injured, which I don't find possible for a spirit. And she told me some more horrible stuff that I would like to keep to myself for now."
"Oh." Scarlet often said that. In the end, I always knew what was bothering her.
She sighed and showed me what she saw. The images were full of the goriest gore you can think of. I thought my eyes would burn right off. "You see why I screamed?"
"Yes. I think camp is ready. I mean food. Let's go." At that, Wendy nodded to Carla and shut down the message system.
We ate. We slept. Except this time I did not wake up tangled in Rain's arms, because Wendy made me sleep with her.
The next morning, I trained in physical combat, which was not the brightest of ideas. To put it bluntly, it was a disaster. I tried to learn how to disarm with a sword, but the sword had other ideas. Every time I tried to disarm Wendy, I ended up cutting my arm. So by the end of my training session, I looked worse than a whipped prisoner. Close to it. Not as many cuts on the back. Anyway, during the brief break, I glanced at Rain and Scarlet. They seemed to be doing better than I did. Now they are lowering my self esteem.
After we got ready, Wendy put the 'quite down' spell on us and we were on our way. Somehow, our journey reminds me of the song 'Over the River and Through the Woods'. Funny, how I thought of that.
That night, I faced one of my worst fears. Talking to the dead. It was my turn to talk to Carla. We talked like long lost sisters, which we were, in a way. Until she finally spilled the beans on all that was happening. I finally understood. She showed me what had happened. It went like this. She suck to Synkinisi's hideout, after handing a piece of her soul to Wendy, which she somehow knew the whereabouts of. Then, she ran inside and found the stupid dragon talking using some colorful worlds to one of her minions. How very unkind. The story was so the cause of Carla's depression. She herself admitted that. I immediately regretted having my eyes open at that moment, because Carla showed us a video of Synkinisi torturing everyone that she had captured.

I screamed. This time it was Rain that came to comfort me as Wendy cut the connection.
