"And I caught it almost perfectly on my first try!" It was sundown, and Sliverpaw couldn't help but brag to her best friends.

Nightpaw rolled her eyes recalling her earlier conversation with Breezepaw, "While you're out hunting at the first light of dawn, me and Breezepaw here would be soundly sleeping." She flicked a tail at her yawning friend.

Breezepaw flinched. "Speaking of sleeping..." She nodded her head towards the other apprentices who were fast asleep after a long day of training.

Sliverpaw sighed. "I guess you're right, but I'm not the slightest bit—" Her mouth stretched in a huge yawn, and Nightpaw nudged her to lie down. Sliverpaw settled next to the dark she-cat and huddled in close for warmth. There was something about Nightpaw that made the she-cat... soft.

Sliverpaw lied awake until she heard the soft snoring of her friends. Resting her head on Nightpaw's back, she could feel her gentle breaths going in and out. She heard a faint heartbeat and felt her own match the sleeping cat's. Blushing a little, Sliverpaw finally allowed herself to drift off into sleep.

The silver apprentice was woken up by her denmate Cottonpaw to begin the day's training. Her haunches ached from the previous day and the sun was barely over the horizon. She groaned quietly getting up and arched in a stretch. She looked back at Nightpaw and felt herself smile at the peaceful cat.

"Hollypelt won't be happy if you're late," Cottonpaw hissed through the den opening.

"Coming!" Sliverpaw answered, sneaking a final glance at her friend as she exited the den.

Hollypelt was waiting with an impatient look on her face with her brother Darkclaw and the two other mentors Goldenstrike and Amberclaw. Amberclaw decided to take over training with Hollypelt to mark the borders. As the apprentices arrived, Amberclaw shared a dipping of heads with Darkclaw and Goldenstrike before the two warriors left their apprentices to them.

"Hello, sweeties," Amberclaw welcomed. "I, with the help of Hollypelt here, am going to take you to the very edge of our border, and most importantly, I'll be introducing you to the FireClan border." The ginger warrior signaled her companion.

Straight-faced and staring off past the young cats, Hollypelt issued a warning. "When we're at the border, there is to be no fooling around especially around FireClan territory. FireClan won't deal well with BrambleClan intruders, so stay close to us."

"But also make sure to study the area. When marking borders, you mustn't cross over. FireClan is very picky about their side," Amberclaw added. "Now are we ready to go?"

The apprentices meowed agreement and had bounce in their step from excitement. The two mentors led the eager apprentices towards Highrock and past the nursery where they eventually came to a stop in the middle of a barren clearing. "Here's the line," Hollypelt announced.

Dustpaw squinted and peered around. "I don't see anything."

"Ah ha, take a good sniff of the air," Amberclaw told the brown tom. All the apprentices breathed the foul air and cringed at the smell. Duskpaw sneezed and stifled a cough. It was a very dry odor with a trace of unwashed fur. "Now can you see it?"

"Yep, definitely," Duskpaw wheezed, a paw covering his nose.

"Why is it so strong?" Cottonpaw whined.

"FireClan wants to make us certain that is their territory and no one else's," Hollypelt explained.

"They sure made their point," Duskpaw muttered. The dark warrior crossed her eyes at him.

"I think it's time we show them the rest of our border. Right, Hollypelt?" Amberclaw flicked her tail in her line of sight.

"Of course."
