She shuddered, her back crammed against the sharp corner of her bedroom, tremors running down her spine. When she closed her eyes, all she could see was the smile of a girl in her bible study. It was bright and glimmering, with the promise of a happy future. Just not with me, she thought violently, hands covering her ears.
"Where is she? Where is that devil child!" The shouts from downstairs were loud and boisterous, coming from the girl's mother. Once a happily married woman, she took a turn for the worse when her daughter came out of the closet, confessing a forbidden love for another girl. The girl pushed herself against her wall, trying to become invisible. She had known it was a bad idea, but keeping herself, her true self hidden, had been far too much for her. She was unraveling at the seams, and now it was time to pray for forgiveness.
Only, she didn't want to.
Her door slammed open, and her mother and father filled up the doorframe. They had always been loving, supportive parents. It was clear now they were only supportive if it followed the words in the bible.
Her mother grabbed the scruff of her neck, forcing the girl to stand up on shaky legs. She felt frozen against time, knowing it was too late to do a thing. She was defenseless against both of her parents, and she knew they would follow the words of the Lord, even if it promised her death.
She crammed her eyes shut, fearing the worse. Preparing herself for things to come."You are a devil child!" The words were forceful. "And you belong in Hell! And Hell is where you're going when I'm done with you, Polly."
Polly knew this to be true. She knew it was only a matter of time before her parents came for her. With that, she dropped her drawing pad, the picture of the smiling girl forgotten as her mother dragged her down the stairs, pushing her out the door to a world where no one would miss her, the devil child.
