"......!" I swing my sword with all my might at that single moment. To strike, you must focus on the target. Yet, why am I unable to strike even a mere wooden dummy like the traveller can?
Since I witnessed the traveller's skills up close in the resistance against the Vision Hunt Decree, I couldn't get it out of my mind. How could she strike so decisively, flawlessly and effortlessly? What must I do to achieve this? I was known in my small remote town for being the 'best in swordsmanship'. It was all I had. But how can I embrace this empty husk of a title when I can name so many people who are superior to me...?
A sweat drips down my face. "Y/N, come eat!" I hear a distant shout from the shack. "Coming!" I yell back. Gently sheathing my sword, I run in the direction the voice came from.
I clasp my two hands together. "Thanks for the food!" with that, I began eating. Beside me sat my father, who was happily eating away. Our shack was run-down, yet it held so many memories and was 'home' for the two of us. Mom was never in the picture. She didn't deserve to be, and neither did I want her to be.
I still remember years ago, on the day I got my vision...
* * *
It was an unusually cooling day. Winds blew and birds chirped, yet I had a bad feeling about the day. That day, I stepped out of our then-intact house to get firewood to cook lunch. Meanwhile, my dad worked tirelessly as a blacksmith, earning barely enough to keep us afloat. I slowly strolled through the paths which laid flatly on the grass patches. All of a sudden, I saw a figure waving in the distance. Within a fraction of a moment, I recognized him; it was my father. His long, uncut hair-- his peculiar build...
Instinctively, I waved back eagerly. He began to make his way to me, but he was far too slow. I began running over to him instead. Thoughts scrambled in my head; maybe dad got off early today! We can finally have dinner together and--
Before I knew it, my gleeful thoughts were cut off.
A sharp and long object drew near my father. It shone, even from afar.
My heart stopped abruptly. No.
I can't...make it.
Not dad...please!
And within a split second, I felt time slow down.
I felt endless power stirring within me.
I knew I had power.
I felt the world was an endlessly tiny speck in comparison to the energy in me.
I can save dad.
As I thought out each word, a blue luminescent glow emitted from me.
Time sped up again, and it felt as if everything was all too rushed. Even so, the sword to my father's neck dropped hastily, as the hard metal impacted the ground. The man previously beside my father began to struggle and scream erratically. I saw him float in the air as large amounts of water covered his face, suffocating him almost instantly.
Thump, thump. I heard my heartbeat slow down, as I ran ever faster towards my father. He seemed to have realized what just happened, and stared at the man in shock and horror.
"Dad!" I yelled, as I hugged him tightly, tears welling up quickly.
An ominous feeling surrounded my chest.
That was the day my vision awakened-- my hydro vision.
It was also the day I first killed someone.
* * *
After that day, I began to train in swordsmanship, taking up commissions to slay ronin or purge hilichurls. With that, I was able to make enough money to survive with my father and stop him from working well into his retirement age.
Yet, despite the peace, I felt it was but momentary.
And I was right.
My instincts are always right.
Then came the Vision Hunt Decree. I simply couldn't let my vision-- my only source of income, get taken away. None of our neighbours cared, none of them had visions anyway. Before I knew it, the Shogunate stood firmly at our front door, threatening to kick it down.
I had no choice; I carried my father out the back door and ran, as fast as I could. They followed mercilessly. In the process, my injuries were countless, but as long as my father was safe, it was alright.
Narrowly, I made an escape to Watatsumi Island with my father. With my vision, I joined the resistance and made myself a name among them, thus earning my father a place to stay, albeit temporarily. While things seemed dim for us, I tried my best to keep my optimism. Otherwise, I'd have been surrendering to the fate of death.
...Then came the traveller.
She joined the resistance, having gotten on the wanted list of the Shogunate after stopping the seizure of the 100th vision. When I witnessed her effortlessly perfect and smooth swordsmanship, it felt as if all that I had achieved up until that moment was but a speck of dust in comparison to hers.
Finally, after a long battle, the Vision Hunt Decree had been rescinded. It was all thanks to the traveller, and rightfully so did she receive the honor of being the captain of a resistance troop.
Meanwhile, I returned to our old shack with nothing in hand other than my rusted sword.
Since then, I trained tirelessly just to become someone worthy of a title.
Someone worthy of supporting my father.
* * *
...Suddenly, a knock on the door startled me.
The knocks got faster, then louder.
I knew exactly who was behind that door.
"Dad. Please, quietly go out the back door." I whispered very inaudibly, but just enough for him to get the gist of what I was saying.
He looked concerned, but nodded, knowing he wasn't in a position to refuse.
But before leaving, he kissed me on the forehead.
The knocks became more like slams. "Y/N. You have three seconds to open the door."
Suddenly, I wanted to cry.
I opened the door, after they almost broke it down.
"Hey. It's your third time being late on payments." a man with violet hair and an enormous hat demanded, in a menacing tone. Some subordinates stood behind him, though it seemed like he wouldn't need it.
"I apologize. I'll pay them immediately." I bowed and apologized, hoping to get lucky.
"...Hah! Y/N, you and I both know this won't be a light punishment for you and your... father." he laughed sadistically. "...So, we can do this hard way, or the easy way." he spoke in a more serious tone.
He grabbed my chin and twisted it up to look at him. "You could take my offer, or we'll kill your dad. Simple, eh?"
"...! You psycho...!" my face turned pale at his lack of sympathy.
Even though at one point, I'd truly thought we were friends.
But no, this was his true personality.
A sadistic ass psycho.
* * *
"Y/N. Join the Fatui."
"Huh...?"
"It's a mutual benefitting deal. Besides... didn't you say that you wanted to support your father?" he said in a rough but condescending tone.
"And...I want you." his eyes turned crazed.
he said, as he grabbed my hand tightly.
We'd only spent 4 months knowing each other then.
That was my first meeting with his "true" persona.
