Hey yo! Sorry, it's been a while, school has been killing me and I've only gotten a break because I'm sick. As such this chapter is going to be a lot shorter than usual but I wanted to update with something ya know? Anyway, hope you all enjoy and I'll probs update again after finals week.
She was floating and it was cold. Such a familiar feeling but compared to the weight of the air on her skin and the warmth of the sun and other living beings it was jarring and terrifying. She refused to open her eyes in fear of seeing the same sight she had seen for who knows how many years.
"I KNEW THAT FILTHY VERMIN WOULD BETRAY US! THEY'RE ALL THE SAME!"
A voice. A voice she knows.
"Please Edgelord, I'm sure she didn't mean to." another voice groaned, trying to no avail to soothe the other.
"She did say that she's been here longer than all of us." A peppy voice pointed out, but the cheer dropped to doubt with the next thing they said, "I just...can't believe she left when Professor was like that."
There's a beat of silence that scratches at her heart. She may still refuse to open her eyes, but now it's because she knows what she'll see. She knows who she'll see.
"Has he said anything to any of you yet?" a deep, gruff voice questions, at last, breaking the sorrowful silence.
"He hasn't even moved since she left."
'You know the least you can do is look at what you've done." a thought permeates her mind, 'You did this to them. You became the very thing you once detested.'
The accusations are enough to deliver an ounce of guilt into her soul. She squeezes her eyes and holds her breath. It's not like she meant to leave them. She just...didn't think to take them with her. They're smart! They would find a way out! Especially when they have each other.
'Isn't that what you thought about yourself at the beginning?' the thought process but despite its strike not a single long forgotten memory slipe to the forefront of her mind. But even if her mind couldn't remember, her heart did. Her pulse stalled and her stomach reached as deep, penetrating despair pierced through her and sent a recognizable cracking through her body. The cracks spread as and the despair dug deeper, consuming her blood, her heart, her breath until she had no choice but to see as her eyelids shattered and her limbs crumpled to dust.
Before she was those who she had clung to and told herself were her friends. Her lonely, company-depraved mind seeking kinship had taken them and used them to fill up the despair. But she had so easily tossed them away when given the chance.
'You're just like...' the thought stopped short, choking on their names.
There they were. Professor was floating limply among a cloud of debris and machinery. Swap and Velvet were rifling through the parts, trying to find anything of value while Edgelord only hampered their progress by hurling random pieces farther into the inky darkness.
With each piece discarded Velevet's cool and calm expression slowly began to crease, another gone, and twitch, there goes another, until finally, "WOULD YOU STOP THAT YOU, CHILD! I GET YOU'RE UPSET, WE ALL ARE BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU GET TO THROW A TANTRUM AND RUIN EVERYTHING! AT LEAST WE'RE TRYING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT OUR SITUATION! WHAT ARE YOU DOING? NO-"
"I AM DOING SOMETHING YOU NIMROD! I'M TAKING OUT MY ANGER OR USELESS GARBAGE THAT HAS NO WAY OF GETTING US TO OUR RESPECTIVE UNIVERSES OR TO THAT DIRTY TRAITOR INSTEAD OF TAKING IT OUT ON YOU!" Edgelord snapped back, cutting off Velvet with a rumbling growl.
Swap looked on with a tight, pursed-lip smile, even his mood was tanking after everything that happened, and this constant arguing and yelling weren't helping. As the two banshees continued to screech and wail, Swap turned his attention to Professor or whoever he was now.
Since combining with his 'doomed' self, Professor has not only doubled in size but so have the cracks running down his face. He doesn't seem to find it uncomfortable, however. In fact, he doesn't seem to feel anything. His eyes were vacant and his body lax, his head tilted just enough to face the last place that human woman had been. A spiral of metal and refuse descended like a swirling, hellish staircase from where they came.
"They're at it again." Swap murmured. He didn't like speaking too much, especially around monsters with minds so similar to his beloved wife's. It felt unnatural and wrong. But maybe talking to...Professor would help.
"You know, I don't think she meant to leave us here." Not even a twitch.
"I'm sure any of us would have done the same." Not even the simulation of a breath. Swap assessed Professor for a moment longer before sighing and letting his eyes droop. "I wonder what she would say to us about this. Do you think she would apologize?"
'Of course, I would.' she whispered to her heart, but it was just a means of reassuring herself. 'You all don't deserve this.'
She willed herself to move, but without her limbs, she could only stay where she was, even turning her head to view them was hard. But as if sensing her desires the very scene before her shifted so that she was directly in front of Professor, her first...companion. Her first friend. But did he ever see her as a friend?
Her unblinking eyes bore into his own, and even though she knew he couldn't see her, it felt like he knew she was there.
She couldn't move her face, the regret pulled at her lips and put a knot in her throat. She struggled to form the words, to even open her mouth to say them. Did he know? Could he sense her turmoil? Her guilt? She could have sworn she saw him twitch but it must have been a trick played by the tears in her eyes.
"I...I'm so-r-rry." Her voice cracked and broke off as the words finally formed in her mouth and fell into the deep. And just as she began to fade away once more, she could have sworn, through the streaming tears, that Professor's eyelights blinked back to life.
