When he looks into the eyes of a bird, he sees nothingness; a black hole. When she looks into the eyes of a bird she sees a world of creation and inspiration and ideas and qualities that all human beings posses. He hides from the world in fear and hopelessness. His idea of life is to get it over with and he's so close if only something or someone could change his mind.
Her idea of life is adventure. She does not cower behind a wall or a screen like he does. Instead, she goes out looking for the people who do. She goes out looking for him.
What she finds is not a man who is afraid of the world, but is afraid of the truth that lies within it. The truth that someday, he won't exist anymore. Not even in the people that knew him. And this idea, of being nothing, not having his soul, is enough for him to want the end to come all the more sooner. If she can't change the thoughts that his mind has been corrupted with, then she can't live on ever the same. Because she would have failed.
She can't change the future. Even love isn't enough to save this man's soul. She has failed.
She wasn't able to give him a life worth living.
