"I'd say there's 130, maybe 140 of 'em," I said as we observed the walker herd in the clearing of a forest while we had some height on a hill looking down at them."You ever see them do this before?" Jesus asks, not moving his head away from watching them.
"No. Never." Aaron simply replied.
"Rosita's backtrail goes right through 'em. We should get the horses, circle around. Then we'll pick it up on foot." I suggest.
"What about them?" Aaron motioned to the herd with his head before looking back at me.
"What about 'em?"
"They're just milling around," Jesus added. "That's not normal."
"No. No, it ain't. We should go." I glanced at the dark clouds approaching our position at a snail's pace. "There's a storm coming. Dog!"
Dog ran to my side as the others left the scouting area with Jesus more hesitant than the rest of us.
"Y/n says he's been trading with Hilltop again." I heard Aaron talking to Jesus about me despite being way in front of him, walking with Dog beside me."He used to come like clockwork a couple times a year. Never stayed, though." Jesus sighed. "The gaps between the trips got longer and longer. Prefers it out here I suppose."
I try to make it look like I'm not eavesdropping as I pretend to scan the treeline as we walk through this open piece of land.
"Sounds like somebody I know." Jesus chuckled at Aaron's statement.
"We used to be explorers. The whole world was ours to rediscover." Jesus said with a tired smile.
"Well, we were out looking for people. Offering them a chance at a new life. Because of you, we were able to find each other. Maybe showing those new people the way forward is the right thing." I feel confused by his statement. New people? Come to think of it, I distinctly remember some people I've never seen at Hilltop.
"I just don't think that-"
"I do." Aaron gently interrupts. "I think you'd be a damn good leader if you just stop fighting it."
"You think that's what I'm doing?"
I stop in my tracks, listening to the gentle whistle of the wind. "Stay," I call to Dog and he obeys, sitting down.
I can faintly hear a low growling and look all around us to see nothing in sight, meaning only one thing. "The herd... It's coming for us." They look confused as they look around at the clear area. "You can hear it. Wind's carrying the sound."
I walk up to Aaron and rummage in his backpack before pulling out an alarm clock. I wind it up before throwing it across the field. "C'mon. Let's put some ground between us and them."
We take a quick walk to The tree line and wait for the herd to move to the alarm clock and sure enough, they do, except one thing is off.
"You put that horde at about 140 right?" Jesus looked through his binoculars as he questioned me.
"Yeah, why?"
"Looks like more than double that now."
"Could be a different herd," Aaron suggested with a low tone. "Or merged with another one."
"Either way. Ain't gonna be there long. Don't matter how big it is, long as it isn't coming our way. Come on." We move into the forest with Jesus again hesitating his fixed gaze on the herd.
