Annalise POV
I slipped on my knee high beige boots and shimmied into my furry hooded navy coat. I pulled my knit cap on over my fluffy hair and finished off the look with a nice scarf. I took one big breath before trudging face first into the cold that was ahead of me. It was only a short distance from my front porch to the mail box, but it was far enough to give me goosebumps. I pulled the hatch down and peered deep inside our swaying mail box. I plunged my hand into the back and retrieved a hand full of envelopes and catalogs. I held it to my body as I ran back towards my house in full speed.
I sorted through all the bills and ads until I came upon a unmarked envelope. It only had my mum's name and our address, no return label. The sound of feet pounding on the stairs snapped me out of my thoughts.
"Did you get the mail?" James asked as he rounded the corner into the living room where I was currently seated.
I nodded waving my hands around the pile of papers stacked in front of me on the coffee table. He kneel in front of the table and began shuffling through it in search of what I thought was a catalog.
I went back to the curious envelope and turned it over and back again, examining it from every inch and angle. James released his focus from his search and swiped the envelope from my hands.
I crossed my arms in anger and huffed, knowing it was now James' property. He stuffed his finger into the top and slid it along, tearing the envelope open. He pulled out a letter and unfolded it. He opened his mouth as his eyes skimmed the first few words. He hopped up from his position on the floor and ran for the stairs.
"JAMES!" I yelled running after him as he climbed up the stairs, taking them 2 at a time.
He ran straight to the nearest bedroom and closed the door behind him, locking it in the process. I huffed banging my fist on his door in defeat.
"Open up you ass!" I hollered banging my fist a second time.
It was silent for a long while then I heard some ruffling of papers and the door was taken from my grip as James stepped out of the room.
He passed by me and went down the stairs without a word. I found him in the kitchen rummaging through some drawers.
"It- There has to be more..." he mumbled shaking his head in disappointment.
"James," I asked peaking around the kitchen door at him with worried eyes "what's going on?"
He turned to face me and his eyes slowly closed in frustration. He stepped forward and handed me the letter that had caused him so much agitation.
I slowly unfolded the lined piece of white paper and began reading. I knew who it was from as soon as I read the first words.
'Dear Teresa, Here is the last check you required to keep me away. I still wish I could see them, one last time.'
My eyes welled up with tears because I knew. I knew that the letter was from my father and I knew that he might actually want me.
James saw as a tear dripped from my red eyes and rolled hastily down my cheek. He wrapped his muscular arms around me and pulled me tight. Once he let me go I wiped my eyes and nodded my head "We have to find those letters."

James and I took two different areas and searched our designated spaces thoroughly. I gathered my findings (which was nothing) and then met to see what James had discovered.
Then we added both of our nothings to our evidence pile and tried to come up with a plan. "So," I started, my voice quaking "he cares again..."
James shook his head "Anna, he never did care" he said coldly, slamming a drawer shut causing me to jump.
"Then why is he trying-" I was interrupted by the slamming of a door and the scuffling of shoes.
"James, Anna?" a soft voice called out coming near us. My mum's face appeared around the wall. Her eyes were accompanied by dark circles and her mascara was smeared down the side of her cheek. "J- James, I got your message. Let me see" she said holding her shaky hand out ready to receive the letter.
She covered her mouth with a pale hand as she read it. Her eyes started to water and she trembled. "H-He's finally done."
