                   ▪Chapter 4▪

My heart throbbed, the agony rolling in my stomach made my head pound.

There has to be another explanation for this, if my dad is out there he would need mom. How could he just leave her here, take me and leave her with nothing?

I couldn’t respond, I don’t even want to. I stare blankly at the floor.

A moment of silence falls upon us, but was soon disrupted by the sound of fidgeting. I bring my eyes to look up at Trethan to see him rummaging through his coat pocket.

“I brought you something, also an order of your father.” He speaks up as he still searches through his pocket.

I’m silent as I study his fluid movements as his fingers seem to shine as he reaches further into his pocket.

“Ah- here it is.” Trethan says proudly as he dwindles a necklace in his hand.

My mouth a gape as I take in the piece of jewelry that was unlike anything I’ve seen before.

A golden chain that was bombarded with small liquid looking colors of a vivid blue and green that weaved through the tightly wrapped chain. The colors seemed to move, in a steady motion almost like it was pulsing. The Pendant that hung on the chain was even more breath taking, the small, thin oval jewel looked transparent at first but then I focused more on just the pendant. The same small liquefied colors swarmed in the pendant, the colors looked almost invisible I had to squint my eyes to study the intricate shapes and swirls inside the jewel. The weird movements of the colors reminded me of the patters that appear on my hand when I’m in the water. The sense of familiarity didn’t bring relief like I expected, instead I felt uncomfortable as I noticed my hands feeling hot as Trethan outstretched the necklace to me.

“It will not hurt you, I promise.”  Trethan says, using slight sarcasm as he read the nervousness on my face.

I hesitated as I glanced at the necklace then back at Trethan; he was smiling, edging me to take it.

After a moment I finally took the necklace into my hand. Cold, just like any piece of jewelry could be. I wasn’t sure why I was expecting something to happen. Part of me thought the majestic looking necklace would bring me a sensation as I laced it in between my fingers, but nothing. Just an ordinary necklace now, in my hands the colors were gone. There was only a gold chain and a clear ordinary looking pendent.

“Why are you giving me this? What is this supposed to do with anything?” I say, still studying the peculiar piece of jewelry.

“Simply because your father wished for your mother to have it. It will remind her of him, if you haven’t noticed it isn’t like any other necklace. It will give her memories of her and your father’s greatest times together, in much greater detail then she will ever remember.  It will also enable your father to talk to her. Of course not in such a way that we are talking now, more so his words will come as thoughts that she assumes are coming from within.”

He pauses and studies me to make sure I’m still following.

“It was really the least he could do, considering he cannot bring her to him.”

I keep the necklace wrapped in between my fingers. “Why can’t she come?” I ask, with enough confidence to look him in the eyes.

“She’s will not be able to survive.” He says, as he leans closer as if that was a sort of secret.

I suck in a sharp breath; none of this is making sense. Of course she can survive; she’s a made-siren.

“Why won’t she will be to survive? Saying those words made my throat feel tight. I’ve always thought as my mom as I strong, independent person, rising a child on her own, in fact rising a child as something it wasn’t. I never questioned her survival skills. To me she seems unbreakable. The way Trethan said that “she won’t be able to survive.” was spoken with too much ease and sureness; I knew my mom would be able to overcome the hardest journey if that meant reuniting with my dad.
