- One day before the asteroid -
Drew's Point of View
"Who ever told you that it was okay for you to talk back to me? You little bitch, I think it's about time that you got what you deserve."
I stand staring blankly at the wall. If I moved at all he would whip harder, I had to follow the daily procedure.
Drew, you know you have to do something about this sick bastard. This has gone on for far too long.
I glance to my left to see a pair of scissors that lay taunting and mocking me on the table.
Don't be a wuss, Drew. You can fix everything. You can get Mason back now that you're older, you can change your name and start a new life. You can't let him control you anymore.
Snapping me out of my thoughts, Walter comes sauntering back with the famous black belt.
"You worthless piece of shit, no wonder why nobody wanted your foster ass. You're lucky I even took you in," Walter chuckles sickly and gets his belt ready.
One whip to my thigh. I don't flinch at all, attempting to not give him the satisfaction of me being in pain.
"Oh c'mon Drew, just try to talk back now. Oh you can't? That's what I thought," he sneers.
Four more whips to my lower back makes me bite my lip. I hold back tears as I start to taste the coppery blood. That fucking dick, this needs to end now. Without thinking, I twirl around his body and grab the scissors. With a grip around his neck, I use all of my strength to pin him to the floor. He looked furious but he didn't fool me as I knew his eyes held dismay.
"I have spent all of my time here fearing you, and this is the day things will change. Burn in hell."
Mallory's Point of View
"Mal, don't be like this," my mother's soft voice told me.
"Mom, I can't do this anymore. I've changed too much for my liking. I was never like this at all, I just want to be my old self again," I say desperately.
"I only wanted to help you," my mother utters in disappointment.
"Help me? All you've done was hurt me, you're slowly killing me on the inside, I just want to be me!" I shout, tears start running down my face.
"But you are yourself, what are you talking about Mallory?" my mother questioned.
"No, I'm not me, Mom, I'm a whole different person. You've changed me too much and I've had enough. I'm done being someone I'm not, this monster you want me to be," My eyes continue to ball out tears.
"Mallory Bowen! You are way too nice to live in this society, they will eat you alive, you should be thanking me for this," my mother yelled.
"Thank you? I'd rather die! And besides, I can't even imagine what the world would be like without people like me. This world would probably fall apart with all these harsh, rude people. Like you for example," I argued back.
"I don't care! You will change, and it will be for the better! I'm your mother, you will listen to me!" She screams.
"You're not going to live my life for me so don't tell me what to do! You're going to die soon anyway!" I screech with a bellow of rage and storm out the door.
"Mallory!" I heard my mother shout, but she doesn't come after me.
"You could've at least shut the door," she hollered behind me. That witch of a mother doesn't even care that I left. Or that I was never coming back.
Violet's Point of View
"I hate you so much, Violet!" my younger sister yelled at me. I hated her too, but deep, deep down, I knew I still loved her very much. I ducked as she threw another one of Mother's expensive vases at me. I already had enough cuts on my arms from when she scratched me with her talon-like nails earlier.
"I hate you!" she ran off into the kitchen. This always happens when she fails a test or when something doesn't go her way - she abuses me. She always complains about how everything comes so easily for me and how it was so unfair for her that nothing did, no matter how much our parents spoiled her and preferred her over me.
"Just die already!" She ran back into the living room with a knife, but this time, I ran towards her too. She looked surprised for a second, but it was enough for me to dive arms-first at her feet, spin on my hands, and kick the knife out of her hand before jumping back up. She looked scared that I actually fought back this time. I pushed her down onto the armchair and tied her with a jump rope I grabbed from underneath the coffee table.
"Violet! Untie me right now!" she screeched. I ran upstairs and grabbed the necklace she got me when we were younger - a lace choker collar with a sapphire pendant - and walked back downstairs. I went over to where my sister was cursing and struggling to get out of her bonds. I kissed her forehead.
"I love you Sapphire Benson, no matter how much you try to hurt me," I told her. Her eyes were closed. She was very still, and very calm. I left my house and kicked the door closed behind me. But before it shut, I heard her say it back.
"I love you too, Vi-" The door clicked shut. Before any tears could be shed, I ran off, not caring where I would end up or what would happen when my parents got back and found her tied up.
