𝑀 𝑈 𝐹 𝐹 𝐿 𝐸 𝐷  voices could be heard beyond her bedroom door. The little girl sat on the edge of her bed, swinging her little legs. Today was 'Check-Up Day.' Once every week, the people in white would ensure that she's alright and give her different coloured gummies to help her grow into a happy and healthy child.

The little girl's smile grew when a familiar face peeked into the room.

"Miss Eddy!" Her white flats hit the floor with little taps as she ran towards the woman.

The woman held out her arms, embracing the child. She picked her up and spun them around with a happy laugh. The woman kissed all over her face making giggles escape her lips.

"Hey cutie!" Dr. Edwin greeted her. She adjusted the six-year-old on her hip. "Ready for your check up?"

"Mhm!" The little girl nodded her head with a big smile.

"Let's go!" Dr. Edwin sang.

The pair walked out of the pink bedroom and went down the corridor. They passed other persons wearing white like Miss Eddy. Many looked curiously at the child in the woman's arms, making her hide her face in the crook of Dr. Edwin's neck.

Dr. Edwin chuckled at her action. "We're almost there." She said. Her eyes locked on a white door with colourful doodles - that were clearly done by a child trying to tap into their artistic vision.

Upon entering the room, a cold breeze and a young man welcomed them. The room was decorated with pretty animal stickers on the walls, numbers and even the alphabet.

"You get to wear a pretty dress, and I must wear this boring coat? Now that is not fair." The young man pouted and turned away from them both.

The little girl ran to him immediately when she was put down. Her tiny arms hugged his legs as much as she could. The corner of the young man's lips curled upwards. "Don't be sad, Davey."

David, Dr. Edwin's assistant, gently ruffled her dark curls. He smiled down at her. "I'm no longer sad, thanks to you."

"Are we ready you two?" Dr. Edwin laughed.

David crouched to her height and placed his hands under her arms. "Ready? One, two...three!" David lifted her onto the only bed in the room and her check-up began.

She was weighed. Her height was taken using the giraffe height chart. A little light was shined into her eyes and a cold little drum listened to her heartbeat.

"All done!" Dr. Edwin cheered.

The little girl clapped her hands excitedly. "Can I go see bubba?"

Dr. Edwin shook her head with a smile, "Not yet, soon. Okay?"

"Okay!" She nodded.

David approached them with a small white cup in one hand and an apple flavoured juice box in the other.

"Don't forget to take your vitamins. You can't become big and strong without them."

There were two blue gummies instead of the usual orange.

"Where are the orange ones?" The girl asked innocently.

"I'm afraid that they're all finished."

"Would I get them next time?" She asked again.

"No, sweetie. But these are even better than your old ones." Dr. Edwin reassured her missing the look David had sent her.

"Would I get them next time?" She asked again.

"No, sweetie. But these are even better than your old ones." Dr. Edwin reassured her missing the look David had sent her.

The little girl ate the gummies and drank her juice because nothing is wrong. Dr. Edwin and David were nice people and nothing was wrong.

The adults left the child to drink her juice and went to put away the tools used and the updated files. David glanced at the little girl - ensuring that she was alright - then eyed the key Dr. Edwin took out of her pocket. She unlocked one of the filing cabinet drawers. Her index finger danced across the letters before stopping on 'L' and dropping the folder in her hands between the others.

"Are you sure we should have done that?" He whispered.

"It's what is needed to be done." She said firmly yet quietly.

"But- "

"No. She isn't old enough to understand what is going on so until then we need to be making the decisions for her. Not them." She slammed the drawer shut and locked it. She pushed her glasses back to the top of her nose bridge and tucked the key safely away in her pocket.

Seeing the young man's frown, she stepped closer and gently patted his shoulder, "Don't worry everything will be alright." She tried reassuring him.

David could only weakly smile back, "Right."

"I'm finished!" The girl told them.

"Very good. Now what do we do with things that were finished with?" Dr. Edwin asked.

"We throw them away?" The young child asked, blinking in thought.

"We throw them away."

Cassie's eyes fluttered open making eye contact with the man in the moon. She looked away, turned onto her back and sat up. She stood up and stretched her aching bones. She shivered at the icy temperature of tiles as she tip toed to the basket in the corner of the room. The basket was filled with various snacks which were snuck into her room by Kenji - she believed.

She picked up a medium sized pack of gummies and moved back to her mess of blankets and pillows on the ground. Cassie leaned against the wall and opened it. Immediately the sugary scent invading her senses. The rustling of the pack and the light of the moon kept her company. Then she pulled out a gummy bear and inspected it.

"Hmm...a blue one."
