Chapter Four: Resurrection

I WISH I COULD say I was well rested. I slept in fragments, waking almost every few minutes or so just to make sure I was alive. Every footstep, every closed door and every conversation I listened so closely to. Different voices rang, and I couldn't help but feel just a bit of dread when I heard Rick's familiar voice speak to another person—A woman. She sounded desperate.

"I don't know if this is gonna work." Rick.

"Well, what are your options?" She asked, and I could hear her shifting to stand on a different foot.

"Kill them." His smooth voice said those words so casually it made me feel sick.

There was a long pause before I heard anything. "If that's what you think is best." She said.

Just like earlier, I could just hear the small grin on Rick's lips. "You say that now."

The woman merely scoffed, but it was full of pain. "Look, I know I'm a shitty wife and I'm not winning any mother of the year awards." She took a breath, "but I need you to know that, not for one second do I think there is malice in your heart. You're not a killer and I know that."

It was quiet.

"So do whatever you gotta do to keep this group safe and do it with a clear conscience."

"What about the girl?" That's me, isn't it?

There was a long pause, a genuine silence. He was thinking. "We figure out if she's telling the truth. If she's lying, kill her too."

"Kill her too."

Not a single grain of hesitation breathed through him, why would it? They don't know me, but this feeling of dread shouldn't bother me so much. I saved one of their people, shouldn't that count for anything? Anything at all?

"I get you're trying to protect us." She began her sentence, "but this girl doesn't look like she'd hurt us. Rick, she saved Hershel." The woman scoffed a chuckle. "Rick, she wouldn't have done what she did if she was going to hurt us.."

"People play nice in the beginning." My throat felt so dry, "and then they take their shot when no one's looking."

I couldn't continue my eavesdropping—because I could just feel someone standing behind the table I was laying on.
