My office door opens.
"Xavier." Her voice cracked. I turn around confused and watch her walk toward me, with tears rolling down her cheeks.
My eyes spot a distinct handprint in the form of a huge bruise around her throat, rage instantly coming into play. She didn't give me much opportunity to inspect her as she jumped into my arms.
My hand instinctively finds the back of her head, comfortingly caressing her. I try to keep a calm front, but internally I was going crazy.
"Who."
Soft sniffles left her lips as she buried her face into my abdomen. "I don't know." She choked. "It was a break in. Ares handled him."
Of course, he did. Even though he's not the one to blame, he could've predicted that something like this would've happened.
The disappointment is fucking surreal. Ares always knew what and how to protect. Expecting the unexpected. It was his damn forte. It's pretty clear he can't protect her outside my walls. I'll just keep her as close to me as possible.
"I'm sorry, neonata. It won't happen again, I promise." I tell her, tightening my hold around her.
•||END OF FLASHBACK||•
"We found three which had access to a chopper. Allowing them to skip security and break in through the floor-to-ceiling window."I stand, facing the window with a cigar between my fingers. "Any family?" I ask, controlling the fury within myself. Never have I felt so much anger for someone else, even if nothing physically happened to me. Not even for my family. I always knew they could handle themselves in such situations, but this is a fifteen year old girl.
Suddenly I'm reminded that in the world I live in, society couldn't give two shits about who dies. Women, men, and child. It doesn't matter. It never fucking mattered. Only now do I feel the repercussion of the this reality.
"No, capo. None."
I sigh in chagrin. "Killing them won't be enough," I grind down on my molars.
"They dare scheme against my daughter? My little hellfire? No matter how much aggression and strength she portrays, she's still emotional little girl."
"Ares has started training the young capa. She's doing more than well." My consigliere, Leo says. "I can see that. Surprisingly, she's more excited to aim a gun than physical combat."
I watch as she fails to shoot her targets, her jaw locking and her head rearing back in frustration.
"She reminds me of yourself, capo. Your patience levels are quite equal."
Ares guides her arms and her feet positioning and tells her to try again. She sighs before trying again. She ends up missing all five shots again. I hear her groan, telling Ares to 'shut up' before she tried again.
